Since December 2021, Aeroplan and Uber Canada have had a partnership through which members can earn points on rides and food delivery.

The latest iteration of the partnership will expand to cover the grocery and retail sections of the Uber Eats app. As of May 3, 2023, Aeroplan members will earn 1 Aeroplan points on grocery and retail purchases made through Uber Eats.

Earn Aeroplan Points on Grocery & Retail Purchases with Uber Eats

Starting May 3, Aeroplan members will be able to earn Aeroplan points on eligible orders in the grocery and retail sections of the Uber Eats app. Members will earn a base rate of 1 Aeroplan point per dollar spent, with no minimum spend required.

This expansion of the partnership lets Aeroplan members earn points at a wide variety of national and regional grocers and retailers.

In addition to the expanded range of eligible purchases, Aeroplan members can take advantage of a handful of new offers after linking their Aeroplan and Uber/Uber Eats accounts.

From May 3–31, 2023, members will earn 5 Aeroplan points per dollar spent on their next grocery delivery order with Uber Eats.

There is also the introduction of a new monthly bonus of 250 Aeroplan points after fulfilling the following requirements:

  • Complete an airport or premium ride with Uber
  • Make a restaurant food delivery order of $40 (CAD) or more
  • Place an eligible order from the grocery or retail section through Uber Eats

If you haven’t yet set up an Uber Eats account, you can earn 1,000 Aeroplan points upon opening your first Uber Eats account and completing an eligible order from the restaurant, retail, or grocery sections in the Uber Eats app.

Furthermore, if you have yet to take a ride with Uber, you can earn 1,000 bonus Aeroplan points upon opening an Uber account and taking your first ride.

Lastly, you can convert Aeroplan to Uber Cash in the Uber app at a ratio of 3,000 points = $25 (CAD) Uber Cash until June 1, 2023. This would result in a value of just 0.83 cents per point, and we’d recommend saving your points for flight rewards instead.

Many Canadians use Uber and Uber Eats in their day-to-day lives, and it’s always good to be able to earn more points in more ways.

How To Maximize the Aeroplan and Uber Partnership

If you use Uber or Uber Eats, you’ll first want to link your Aeroplan account with your Uber/Uber Eats account, which is easy to do.

Open up your Uber or Uber Eats app, and open up the menu on the top left corner. Tap “Settings”, and scroll down to find Aeroplan under the “Rewards” section.

From there, select “Link Account” and then you’ll be asked to sign in to your Aeroplan account. Once that’s done, you’ll be earning Aeroplan points on qualifying Uber rides and Uber Eats orders, which now includes the grocery and retailer sections.

As a reminder, the base earning rates through the Aeroplan and Uber partnership are as follows, not taking into consideration any of the promotional earning rates outlined above:

  • Earn 1 point per dollar spent on airport or premium rides with Uber
  • Earn 2 points per dollar spent on premium rides to airports with Uber
  • Earn 1 point per dollar spent on Uber Eats orders

Aside from the base points you’ll earn through the partnership, you’ll then want to make sure you’re pairing your orders with the right credit card. Naturally, you’ll want to look to a card with the highest category bonus for rideshares and food delivery.

The first credit cards that come to mind are the Aeroplan co-branded credit cards to pay for your Uber and Uber Eats purchases. If you want to pool all of your points in one program, then you can stack the points earned through the Aeroplan and Uber/Uber Eats partnership with the points earned from your credit card.

However, keep in mind that you can benefit from earning more points with cards that have category bonuses for rideshares and food delivery.

The best all-around credit cards that have category bonuses for rideshares and food delivery are the American Express Cobalt Card and the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card.

With the Cobalt, you’ll earn 2 Amex MR points per dollar spent on rideshares, and 5 points per dollar spent on food delivery. Keep in mind that you can transfer Amex MR points to Aeroplan at a 1:1 ratio, so if you factor in the base earning rate with the points earned from your credit card, you can earn up to 4 points per dollar spent on rideshares and up to 6 points per dollar spent on food delivery.

With the above promotion, you can earn 5 Aeroplan points and 5 Amex MR points per dollar spent on your next grocery or retail delivery order with Uber Eats from May 3–31, 2023.

With the Scotiabank Gold Amex, you’ll earn 3 Scene+ points per dollar spent on rideshares, and 5 Scene+ points per dollar spent on food delivery. Since Scene+ points have a fixed value of 1 cent per point, this is equivalent to a 3% or 5% return, respectively, which comes in addition to the points you’ll earn through the partnership.

Conclusion

Aeroplan and Uber have expanded their partnership, and as of May 3, 2023, you can earn Aeroplan points on purchases made in the grocery and retailer sections on the Uber Eats app.

As part of the expanded partnership, you can earn 5x points on your first grocery or retail order from May 1–31, 2023, as well as new monthly bonuses of 250 points apiece.

Be sure to pair your Uber and Uber Eats orders with the right credit card to make sure you’re maximizing your earn.
