Privacy Policy

Prince of Travel ("we", "us", "our") operates princeoftravel.com (the "Site"). This privacy policy explains how we collect, use, protect, and share your personal information in accordance with Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and applicable provincial privacy legislation.

Information We Collect

Information you provide directly:

  • Account registration: Name, email address, and password when you create an account
  • Membership purchases: Billing information processed by Stripe (we do not store payment card numbers on our servers)
  • Profile data: Home airport, travel goals, loyalty program balances, and card portfolio information you choose to share
  • Newsletter subscription: Email address and name when you subscribe
  • Contact forms: Name, email, and message content
  • Hotel booking requests: Travel dates, hotel preferences, and guest details submitted for Prince Collection bookings

Information collected automatically:

  • Site activity: The pages you visit, how far you scroll and how long you stay, the links you click (including links to credit card applications and our partners), and how you arrived (for example, from a search engine or a link in one of our emails). We record this ourselves, using a cookie that gives your browser a random ID, and we also use Google Analytics. In our own records we don't store your IP address, and we drop anything after the "?" in a web address, so search terms and private links aren't kept. If you've subscribed to our emails or have an account, we may link this activity to your email address or account (see Personalization below).
  • Email activity: When you open one of our emails or click a link in it, our email provider tells us, along with the time, the link, your IP address and the kind of device or email app you used. We use this to learn which emails are useful, to personalize what we send you, and to stop emailing people who no longer read them.
  • Cookies: Essential cookies for authentication and site functionality, analytics cookies for usage measurement, and advertising cookies served by Mediavine (our display advertising partner). See the Cookies section below.
  • Server logs: IP address, request timestamps, and referrer URLs retained for security and debugging.

Ask Prince of Travel conversations:

When you use Ask Prince of Travel, your messages are sent to Anthropic for processing. Conversations are:

  • Stored in our database, including chats from people who aren't signed in. If you're signed in, this also gives you your chat history.
  • Processed by Anthropic's API in the United States. Anthropic does not use your conversations to train their models. See Anthropic's privacy policy for details.
  • Retained for up to 24 months, after which they are automatically deleted

How We Use Your Information

  • To provide and improve our services, including content, membership features, and Ask Prince of Travel
  • To deliver newsletters and marketing communications you have opted into (in compliance with CASL)
  • To process membership payments and manage your subscription
  • To personalize the emails we send you (see Personalization below) and Ask Prince of Travel recommendations
  • To analyze Site usage and improve our content and products
  • To respond to your inquiries and support requests
  • To detect and prevent fraud or unauthorized access

Personalization

If you subscribe to our emails, we use your activity to send you more of what you care about. We keep a short interest profile for each subscriber: the destinations, loyalty programs, credit cards and kinds of travel (such as business class or luxury hotels) you've been reading about, and whether you seem more focused on planning trips or on earning points. For example, if you've been reading our guides to Japan, we might send you our best article on getting there with points. If you've come back to the same credit card a few times, we might send you a short summary of it.

Your profile is built from:

  • Your site activity over the past 90 days, once it's linked to you. When you subscribe or sign in, we note the random ID of the browser you used, and activity from that browser is then connected to your email address or account.
  • The links you've clicked in our emails over the past 180 days
  • What you've told us, such as the interests you picked when you signed up
  • The topics you've asked Ask Prince of Travel about, after giving it your email or from a browser linked to you
  • Whether you're a member, or have recently started signing up for a membership

What we don't do with it:

  • We don't sell it, and we don't share it with advertisers, card issuers or any other partner. Partners only ever see totals, such as how many readers clicked through to a card, never who you are.
  • We don't use it to decide what you can get from us or what you pay. It only shapes which articles and emails we show and send you.

Switching it off: Every newsletter and marketing email we send has a link at the bottom to manage your email preferences. Switch off "Personalize my emails" there, or email privacy@princeoftravel.com. When you switch it off, we delete your interest profile and stop building one. You'll keep getting the emails you signed up for, in the version everyone else gets. If you answer a question in one of our emails (for example, whether you're planning a trip or building up points), we'll still use your answer for that series of emails.

Quebec residents: If your account lists Quebec as your province, personalization stays off unless you switch it on in your email preferences. If you live in Quebec and don't have an account, you can switch it off there at any time, or email us and we'll do it for you.

Data Processors

We share your data with the following third-party service providers, each of which processes data on our behalf under contractual obligations:

  • Supabase – Authentication, database, and user accounts (US)
  • Hostinger – Web hosting (US)
  • Stripe – Payment processing and subscription management (US)
  • Postmark – Email delivery, including newsletters (US)
  • Klaviyo – Our previous email platform, which still holds subscriber records while we finish moving to Postmark (US)
  • Anthropic – Ask Prince of Travel, and help drafting replies to emails you send us (US)
  • Daily – Video for live events and calls (US)
  • Cloudflare – Storage for recordings of live events and calls (US)
  • Mediavine – Display advertising (US)
  • Google Analytics – Site analytics (US)

We do not sell your personal information. We may also share data if required by Canadian law or court order, or to protect our legal rights.

YouTube

Our team uses YouTube API Services to run the Prince of Travel YouTube channel. Through them we upload and schedule our own videos, set their titles, descriptions and thumbnails, read our channel's statistics, and read the comments posted on our videos. Only our team signs in with Google, to our own channel. The Site never asks you to connect a Google or YouTube account.

  • What we read: Our channel's videos and statistics, and the comments people post on our videos, including the comment, the commenter's public YouTube name and their channel ID. We keep these on our own servers.
  • How we use it: To publish our videos, to learn which ones help our readers, and to reply to comments or hide spam. Comments are sent to Anthropic to help draft replies, as with emails you send us. We don't sell this information or share it with partners.
  • Videos on our pages: Some articles show our videos in YouTube's embedded player. When you play one, YouTube may set cookies and collect information under Google's policies.
  • YouTube's terms and Google's privacy policy: Watching or commenting on our videos is governed by the YouTube Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy.
  • Your Google account: We never ask for access to your Google account. If you give any app access to it, you can remove that access at any time from Google's security settings.

Cross-Border Data Transfers

Several of our service providers operate in the United States. By using the Site, you acknowledge that your personal information may be transferred to and processed in the US, where privacy laws may differ from those in Canada. We ensure appropriate contractual protections are in place with all processors.

Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL)

We comply with Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation. We will only send you commercial electronic messages (emails) if you have provided express or implied consent. Every marketing email includes a clear unsubscribe link. We honour all unsubscribe requests within 10 business days.

Your Rights Under PIPEDA

As a Canadian resident, you have the right to:

  • Access your personal information held by us
  • Correct inaccurate personal information
  • Withdraw consent for data processing (which may limit your ability to use certain features)
  • Delete your account and associated personal data
  • Unsubscribe from marketing emails at any time
  • Switch off personalization at any time, from the link in any of our emails or by writing to us

To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@princeoftravel.com. We will respond within 30 days.

Data Retention

  • Account and profile data: Until you delete your account, plus 30 days for backup recovery
  • Chat conversations: 24 months from creation
  • Newsletter subscriber data: Until you unsubscribe
  • Payment records: 7 years (tax and legal compliance)
  • Site activity records: Up to 26 months
  • Email opens and clicks: Up to 26 months
  • Interest profiles: Rebuilt every day. Deleted right away if you switch personalization off, and within a day if you unsubscribe
  • Analytics data: 26 months (Google Analytics default)
  • Server logs: 90 days

Cookies

We use three categories of cookies:

  • Essential: Required for authentication, security, and core site functionality. Cannot be disabled.
  • Analytics: Our own cookie, which gives your browser a random ID for up to a year, so we can count visits and, if you subscribe or sign in, personalize as described above. Google Analytics cookies also measure site usage; you can opt out via Google's opt-out tool.
  • Advertising: Mediavine uses cookies to serve relevant display ads. Members receive ad-free browsing. You can manage advertising preferences through your browser settings or Mediavine's privacy policy.

Payment Security

All payment processing is handled by Stripe, which is PCI DSS Level 1 certified. We never store, process, or have access to your full credit card number.

Children's Privacy

The Site is not directed at individuals under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will promptly delete it.

Data Breach Notification

In the event of a data breach that poses a real risk of significant harm, we will notify affected individuals and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada as required by PIPEDA's breach notification requirements.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes are posted on this page with the updated date.
