The American Express Air Miles for Business Card is a good option for business owners who are dedicated to the Air Miles program. It’s a better choice if you want to keep your business expenses organized, but perhaps not as appealing for individuals just looking to top up their Air Miles balances.
This card is a charge card, so it won’t count against your limit of having up to four American Express credit cards open at the same time. You’ll also have to pay the balance in full every month – but you should be doing that anyway!
Bonuses & Fees
As a welcome bonus, this card offers 2,000 Air Miles upon spending $5,000 within the first 90 days.
The card has an annual fee of $180.
The fee for adding authorized users is $50.
The American Express Air Miles for Business Card has a two-tier earning structure. You’ll earn:
- 1 Air Mile for every $10 spent at participating Air Miles partner retailers
- 1 Air Mile for every $15 spent on all other purchases
The return on spend can be decent, but only if the majority of your business expenses are at Air Miles partner stores.
Air Miles are redeemed in two categories: Cash Rewards and Dream Rewards. You can set your preference on the Air Miles website in any ratio (e.g., 95% Cash Rewards, 5% Dream Rewards), but keep in mind while you can change this later, the miles cannot be reallocated.
Cash Rewards can be redeemed at a rate of 95 Air Miles = $10 (10.5 cents per point) at participating merchants, including the Sobeys and Metro grocery chains.
Dream Rewards are best redeemed for travel, including short-haul flights, hotels, car rentals, and attraction tickets. You should always aim to redeem Dream Rewards for at least 10.5 cents per point against the cash price, as otherwise you would’ve been better off collecting Cash Rewards instead.
Perks & Benefits
The American Express Air Miles for Business Card comes with all of the standard perks of being an American Express cardholder, including Front of the Line event presale tickets, exclusive invites for American Express Experiences, and periodic Amex Offers for additional rebates and rewards on everyday spending.
This card offers Common Carrier Accident insurance of up to $100,000 as well as flight and baggage delay insurance of up to $500 on delays over four hours.
Like all American Express cards, the rental car collision insurance will insure up to an MSRP of $85,000, higher than most issuers’ $65,000.
This card will also double the manufacturer’s warranty, up to one additional year, for purchases made with the card.
