Bonuses & Fees
Introduced in December 2020 and refreshed in August 2021, the American Express Green Card is a no-annual-fee Membership Rewards credit card. It offers 10,000 Membership Rewards points upon spending $1,000 in the first three months.
If you’re looking for a no-fee “keeper card” to support your credit history in the long run, this may well be an attractive offer. Supplementary cards are also free.
The Amex Green Card offers a basic earning rate of 1 MR point per dollar spent on all purchases. As you can probably tell, this earning rate isn’t really the most competitive, which is somewhat expected for an entry-level product with no annual fee.
The Amex Green Card is best-suited for those who are interested in collecting MR points while building up a relatively new credit file or restricting themselves to lower annual fees and credit limits.
I wouldn’t recommend putting your daily spending on this card, compared to the numerous stronger cards out there (such as the American Express Cobalt Card, to name just one).
Amex MR points are among the most valuable points currencies that one can collect in Canada. You can transfer them to Aeroplan or British Airways Avios at a 1:1 ratio, or convert them to Marriott Bonvoy for hotel stays at a 1:1.2 ratio.
With the current welcome bonus of 10,000 MR points, you’d be earning 10,000 Aeroplan points, 10,000 Avios, or 12,000 Bonvoy points – all of which are decent pickups for no annual fee.
The American Express Green Card offers two types of basic insurance for cardholders, which is nice to see on a no-fee card:
- Buyer’s Assurance Protection Plan, which automatically doubles the manufacturer’s warranty on a new purchase, up to one year
- Purchase Protection Plan, which reimburses you for the cost of a purchase in the event of direct physical damage or theft within 90 days
