As part of this “in-path offer” via the Air Canada website you’ll earn 40,000 Aeroplan points plus a $150 statement credit on Air Canada or Air Canada Vacations purchases.
For those of you who prefer to earn Aeroplan points, this offer could be superior to the default public offer of 25,000 Aeroplan points and an Air Canada Buddy Pass on this card.
New In-Path Offer: 40,000 Aeroplan Points + $150 Air Canada Statement Credit
This new alternative offer for the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite is known as an “in-path offer”: it shows up during the booking path of an Air Canada flight.
We’ve seen similar in-path offers on the American Express Aeroplan cards in the past, and it’s also a common practice among the major US credit cards. Indeed, in-path offers appear to be quite successful in generating conversions for the airlines and credit card issuers.
You can access the in-path offer simply by starting to make a new flight booking on the Air Canada website.
I had run a dummy search for a Calgary–Montreal round-trip flight (paid with cash, not points), and saw the following banner show up on the price summary page:
(If you don’t see the banner showing up, try running a search using your browser’s incognito mode.)
Clicking on the “Apply and Book” button, I was then taken to TD’s secure page to complete the application:
The breakdown of the welcome bonus is as follows:
- Earn 10,000 Aeroplan points when you make your first purchase
- Earn an additional 30,000 Aeroplan points when you spend $1,000 in the first 90 days
Air Canada has confirmed that the full terms and conditions of this offer are as follows:
†Must apply by April 30, 2022. Welcome Bonus of 10,000 Aeroplan points will be awarded to the Aeroplan Member account associated with the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card Account of the Primary Cardholder (“Account”) only after the first eligible Purchase is made on the Account that is not subsequently rescinded, the subject of a charge back request or otherwise disputed. For Residents outside of Quebec: To receive the additional bonus 30,000 Aeroplan points you must make $1,000 in net Purchases on your Account, including your first Purchase, within 90 days of Account opening. To qualify for the $150 statement credit, an eligible Air Canada purchase of at least $150 total must be charged to your Card and posted to your Account within the first 12 months of Account opening. Eligible purchases for the $150 statement credit offer are those made directly from Air Canada for products and services that are i) completed online at aircanada.com, ii) completed in-person at an Air Canada customer service counter at the airport and iii) Air Canada Vacations packages. Air Canada must be identified as the merchant of record, and only purchases from a merchant coded with Merchant Category Code (MCC) 3009 (excluding purchases made through 3rd party travel agencies) will be eligible for the $150 statement credit. Here are some examples that do not qualify for the statement credit offer: i) if the purchase for an Air Canada product is not made directly with Air Canada, such as if you make a purchase through a third-party or non-direct travel agent; or ii) if you make a purchase for non-Air Canada products from aircanada.com, such as a car rental, a hotel booking, or any other product or services from a third-party partner. Eligible purchases do not include fees, gift cards, cash advances, balance transfers, cash-like transactions, interest charges, optional services, refunds, rebates, or other similar credits. The statement credit will be applied to the Account within 90 days from date of purchase. The applicable statement credit is an Account statement credit, not a price reduction applicable when making an eligible purchase. A maximum of one statement credit of $150 can be earned per Account. For Quebec Residents only: To receive the additional bonus 30,000 Aeroplan points, you must keep your Account open, active, and in good standing for 90 days after Account opening. To qualify for the $150 statement credit, an eligible purchase of at least $150 must be charged to your Card and posted to your Account within the first 12 months of Account opening and not be subsequently rescinded, the subject of a charge back request or otherwise disputed. Eligible purchases do not include fees, gift cards, cash advances, balance transfers, cash-like transactions, interest charges, optional services, refunds, rebates, or other similar credits. The applicable statement credit is an Account statement credit, not a price reduction applicable when making an eligible purchase. A maximum of one statement credit of $150 can be earned per Account. The statement credit will be applied to the Account within 90 days from date of purchase. For all Accounts: The Primary Cardholder is responsible for all charges to the Account, including those made by any Additional Cardholder. Other conditions apply. If you have opened an Account in the last 12 months, you will not be eligible for this offer. We reserve the right to limit the number of Accounts opened by one person, and the number of Welcome Bonus Aeroplan points, additional bonus Aeroplan points and statement credits awarded to any one person or Account. Offers may be changed, withdrawn or extended at any time and cannot be combined with any other offer unless otherwise specified. Your Account must be open and in good standing at the time the Welcome Bonus Aeroplan points, additional bonus Aeroplan points and statement credit are awarded. Please allow up to 8 weeks after the conditions for each offer are fulfilled for the Welcome Bonus Aeroplan points and additional bonus Aeroplan points to be credited to your Aeroplan Member account.
There are two key differences between the in-path offer and the main offer:
- Instead of an extra 15,000 Aeroplan points and a Buddy Pass upon meeting the minimum spend requirement, you’ll get an extra 30,000 Aeroplan points instead.
- Instead of a first-year annual fee waiver for the primary cardholder and up to three additional cardholders, you’ll get the $150 Air Canada statement credit upon instead.
Is This Better Than 25,000 Points + Buddy Pass + First Year Free?
The public offer for the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite is 25,000 Aeroplan points and an Air Canada Buddy Pass, also upon spending $1,000 in the first three months. In addition, the first-year annual fee is waived as part of the main offer.
Compared to 40,000 Aeroplan points and a $150 Air Canada statement credit, which offer is better?
The $150 statement credit applies to Air Canada and Air Canada Vacations purchases. However, note that taxes and fees on Aeroplan redemptions also code as Air Canada purchases, so this statement credit could be equally useful to someone who primarily books on points, not on cash.
Meanwhile, the value of the Air Canada Buddy Pass will vary significantly based on your travel patterns.
If you travel frequently as a couple or a family and sometimes fly on paid Air Canada tickets within North America, then the Buddy Pass can help you extract significant value of $500+.
On the other hand, if you’re a solo traveller or someone who focuses on international long-haul travel, the Buddy Pass will have little to no value to you.
With the above in mind, everyone will have to decide for themselves which bundle of welcome bonuses is more attractive: 25,000 points and a Buddy Pass via the standard offer, or 40,000 points and a $150 statement credit (which can be used to offset Aeroplan taxes and fees) via the in-path offer.
Who’s Eligible for the In-Path Offer?
Since the in-path offer shows up for virtually anyone who tries to book a flight on the Air Canada website, everyone ought to be eligible for it, and there shouldn’t be any targeted criteria.
Unfortunately, some applicants have reported encountering challenges with TD’s online application system lately, and many people are getting declined with no rhyme or reason.
As this offer is only available through the Air Canada booking flow, you won’t be able to apply for it in-branch or over the phone with TD.
If you do need to call to push your application through, I’d suggest being ready to explain the nature of the Air Canada in-path offer in case TD’s representative isn’t aware of it.
TD and Aeroplan continue to mix things up with a new in-path credit card offer for 40,000 Aeroplan points + $150 Air Canada statement credit on the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card.
Be sure to apply by April 30, 2022 by pulling up a dummy booking on the Air Canada website if you’re interested. Alternatively, the main offer for 25,000 Aeroplan points, a core-tier Buddy Pass, and First Year Free is available until March 6, 2022.
Think about whether the Buddy Pass or Aeroplan points are more suitable to your travel style when you’re deciding between pursuing the standard public offer or the in-path offer.
