Earn 7x Aeroplan Points on Air Canada and Other Travel
After registering, cardholders can earn points at 7x their usual earning rate on Air Canada and other travel purchases through May 31, 2023.
Eligible travel purchases for include “Air Canada airlines, car rental agencies and hotels”. You can earn bonus points on up to $2,000 (CAD) purchases in these categories made with the core, premium, and small business CIBC Aeroplan cards, or up to $1,000 (CAD) for the no-fee CIBC Aeroplan Visa Card. If you hold multiple cards, you’d be eligible to earn bonus points up to the maximum limit on each one.
For example, the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card normally earns 1.5x points on Air Canada, but only 1x points on other travel purchases.
With this 7x bonus in play, the new earning rates would be 10.5x and 7x on Air Canada and other travel purchases, respectively – and the effective incremental earning rate would be 9x and 6x on Air Canada and other travel purchases, respectively.
Thus, if you’re using the entire $2,000 limit on Air Canada flights, you’re getting your base earnings of 3,000 points, plus a bonus of 18,000 points.
Conversely, if you’re using the limit entirely on other travel purchases alone, you’d be getting your base earnings of 2,000 points, plus a bonus of 12,000 points – still a considerable amount of points on travel purchases you might need to make anyway.
Similarly, consider the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card, which normally earns 2x points on Air Canada. With a septupled earning rate of 14x, and therefore an effective 12x incremental earning rate under this promotion, you could receive 24,000 bonus points if you choose to spend the $2,000 maximum on Air Canada flights entirely.
Note that you can also mix your spending and receive bonus points on your purchases accordingly. For example, you can book Air Canada flights, book Marriott hotels, and rent a car with Hertz, adding up to a total of $2,000 (CAD).
A 7x multiplier on the regular earning rate is extremely valuable, and it’s certainly worth splitting your upcoming travel purchases across as many CIBC Aeroplan cards in your household as possible, since each card gets its own $1,000 or $2,000 (CAD) limit.
These bonus amounts can take 8–10 weeks after the offer period to be deposited into your Aeroplan account.
As with most promotions of this nature, the points you earn should count towards your Everyday Status Qualification, giving you a boost towards earning entry-level Aeroplan 25K status without having to fly.
Also: 15% Off Base Fares with Air Canada
Concurrently, Air Canada is also offering a blanket 15% discount on base fares in economy class, premium economy, and business class within Canada, the US, and to sun destinations.
The promotion code can be found directly on the CIBC offer page, and you must book by May 31, 2023 for travel by December 15, 2023.
While this sale is being advertised as part of the same CIBC offer, it doesn’t seem like you need to be a current CIBC Aeroplan cardholder, nor pay with your CIBC Aeroplan card, to take advantage of the discount code.
If you have any upcoming intra-North America trips with Air Canada over the upcoming period, now may be a good time to lock in a booking, taking advantage of both the 15% discount and the 7x Aeroplan points for paying with a CIBC co-branded credit card.
Conclusion
Until May 31, 2023, you’ll earn seven times the regular Aeroplan points on Air Canada and other travel purchases on CIBC Aeroplan co-branded credit cards. Make sure to register for the offer before making your purchases.
CIBC had come up with a similar offer last year, so it’s nice to see that the bank appears to be making this a recurring promotion. This time around, you have the opportunity to earn a sizeable amount of bonus Aeroplan points from your upcoming travel purchases, up to $1,000 spent on the entry-level card or $2,000 spent on the core, premium, or small business cards.
