There’s a new Amex Offer that lets you earn an easy $20 statement credit for money that you’ll be spending anyway on your American Express cards, simply by paying with the contactless feature.

Tap to Pay: Spend $10, 10 Times, Get $20

The new Tap to Pay Amex Offer requires manual registration before it applies on your card.

You’ll earn a $20 statement credit upon making 10 separate transactions of at least $10 on your eligible American Express credit card through a contactless payment method, which includes tapping the physical card, Google Pay, Apple Pay, or Samsung Pay.

The offer ends on December 31, 2022, so you’ll need to make your 10 transactions of $10+ each by then.

This offer has a registration cap of 50,000 cardholders, so make sure to hit the Register button as soon as possible to secure your eligibility.

This Amex Offer has been witnessed across a wide range of American Express cards, including the Platinum Card, Marriott Bonvoy Personal Card, Aeroplan Card, and more. However, it’s worth noting that it hasn’t been targeted on quite as widespread a basis as many other recent Amex Offers, with some cardholders reporting that they haven’t seen the offer show up on any of their products.

If you’re playing the game in two-player mode or more, be sure to check all of your household members’ Amex accounts to see if the offer has popped up across all your players’ cards.

Tap to Pay: Spend $5, Get $2, 10 Times

Another similar Tap to Pay Amex Offer is floating around, in which you can earn a $2 statement credit upon spending at least $5 through any contactless payment method, up to 10 times.

This offer also ends on December 31, 2022, and has been seen on the Aeroplan Reserve Card and Business Gold Card, although there are likely more out there.

Note that while both offers offer a $20 statement credit, this one is actually easier to earn given the credits are given intermittently rather than in all all-or-nothing scenario. Furthermore, this offer only requires spending $5 tenfold and $50 in total via contactless to earn a $20 credit, rather than $10 tenfold or $100 in total.

An Easy $20 Back Per Card

In my view, the easiest way to maximize this $20 statement credit is exceedingly simple: put the card that’s received the Amex Offer at the top of your wallet or add it to your mobile wallet and use it for your daily transactions.

Eventually, you’ll rack up 10 transactions of $10+ or more or 10 transactions of $5 each, and trigger either the $20 credit or $2 credit 10 times. Then, you can move on to the next card that’s received the Amex Offer, or go back to your usual optimized spending strategy – whether that’s a 5x multiplier for food and drinks or a new card where you’re looking to meet a minimum spending requirement.

Alternatively, if you were to make 10 separate transactions of exactly $10 or $5, you’d effectively earn a 20% or 40% discount on whatever you were buying.

The easiest way to make this happen is probably to take a leaf out of the Shop Small promotion‘s book: visiting your favourite restaurant or cafe and buying or reloading $10 or $5 gift cards in 10 separate transactions.

Both avenues have their advantages: spending exactly $10 or $5 10 times allows you to get the Amex Offer out of your way without having to worry about it any more, but can represent a hassle to get it done; on the other hand, using the card organically for daily purchases is probably more convenient, but takes a longer time to complete.

Scotiabank American Express Cardholders Can Register Too

As we’ve seen on previous Amex Offers, the Tap to Pay Amex Offer offer is also available on the Scotiabank-issued Amex credit cards: the Scotiabank Gold American Express, Scotiabank American Express, and Scotiabank Platinum American Express.

To be specific, the “Spend $10, 10 times, and Earn a $20 Statement Credit” is the offer available to Scotiabank American Express cardholders.

Manual registration is required via a separate portal, accessible via this link.

This gives you yet another option to increasing your earnings under this promotion by registering and using the Amex Offer on both your Amex- and Scotiabank-issued Amex products.

In particular, the fact that Scotiabank cards can register for the offer without having to have been targeted for it in the first place means that you can rake in the $20 credits on as many primary or supplementary Scotia Amex cards as you hold.

Conclusion

American Express has put forth two new Amex Offer geared towards contactless purchases. The first allows eligible cardholders to earn a $20 statement credit upon spending $10+ in 10 separate transactions through tapping their card or using a mobile wallet. The second allows eligible cardholders to earn a $2 statement credit upon spending $5, up to 10 times.

In both versions, you’ll earn effectively a $20 statement credit. Note the second offer is slightly better, representing a 40% effective discount compared to 20% on the first version of the offer, and also offering intermittent credits rather than all at once at the end.

Check to see whether you’ve been targeted for this offer on any of your American Express cards, and make sure to manually register any Scotiabank American Express products you have too.

Lock in your eligibility before the registration cap is reached, and then start tapping away those transactions before December 31, 2022.
