Marriott Amex US Offer: Up to 20% Discount at North American Hotels

There are some exciting new Amex Offers on the US-issued American Express cards that apply to Marriott hotels across North America, including in Canada.

For those of us who dabble in US credit cards, these offers are an easy opportunity to secure meaningful discounts on Marriott hotel stays through to the end of the year.

Up to 20% Back on Marriott Stays

There are two different Marriott Amex US Amex Offers throughout the first quarter of 2023, and both require manual registration before they apply on your card. Note that all figures in this article are in US dollars.

Spend $300, Get $60 on Marriott Hotels

With the first Amex Offer, you’ll earn a $60 statement credit upon making a $300 purchase at Marriott properties in Canada, the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

Note that the following brands are excluded:

Excludes Marriott Vacation Club®, Marriott Grand Residence Club®, Design Hotels™, Protea Hotels®, Marriott Executive Apartments®, Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy®, Vistana Signature Network and Vistana Residence Network.

This offer is valid through March 31, 2023.

This offer appears to be somewhat targeted, albeit on a very wide basis, so make sure to check your Amex Offers across all your US-issued American Express cards.

Get 20% Back, Up to $50

With the second Amex Offer, you can earn 20% back as a statement credit of up to $50 upon staying at Marriott properties in Canada, the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

This offer is also valid through March 31, 2023.

Note that the following brands are excluded:

Excludes Marriott Vacation Club®, Marriott Grand Residence Club®, Design Hotels™, Protea Hotels®, Marriott Executive Apartments®, Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy®, Vistana Signature Network and Vistana Residence Network.

The qualifying Marriott purchase should be at least $250 in order to maximize your return of $50, which represents 20% back.

This offer appears to be targeted on business cards, so make sure to check your Amex Offers dashboard across all your small business cards.

Earn up to $50 back at the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver with this Amex Offer

Both offers effectively give you up to a 20% discount on your Marriott stays from now through to the expiry dates. Note that the offers work on cumulative purchases, too, so you can still benefit from a few separate cheaper hotel stays if you’d like.

The terms of both offers state that enrolment is limited, so register as soon as possible to lock in the offers.

With Amex US, if you have more than one card to your name, it’s fairly likely that you’ll end up receiving an Amex Offer across multiple accounts at first.

However, once you add an offer to one of your accounts, it’s typically no longer eligible to be added to other accounts. That means you should be careful about which card you add the offer to.

Ideally, you’ll be able to add the offer to your Amex US Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card, Amex US Marriott Bonvoy Bevy Card, or Amex US Marriott Bonvoy Business Card, as these cards earn the highest possible return of 6x Marriott Bonvoy points at Marriott hotels.

Because the credit is applied on the Amex side, the discount will kick in based on the final amount charged by the hotel. That means you can combine it with, say, a corporate code or the StayVancouver or Edmonton’s Best Hotels promotions.

Remember that each offer’s expiry date refers to the transaction date of your hotel stay, so any hotel stay that ends by that date (excluding prepaid stays) should work.

Enhance Your Stay with Marriott STARS and Luminous

If you don’t have Marriott Bonvoy elite status, or even if you do but you wish to further elevate your stay, booking with Prince of Travel through Marriott STARS or Luminous gives you additional benefits for no extra cost.

Luxury hotels, such as the St. Regis Toronto, The Ritz-Carlton Toronto, and The Ritz-Carlton Montreal can be booked via Marriott STARS.

Meanwhile, a wider range of properties, including The DOUGLAS Vancouver and the W Montreal, can be booked via Marriott Luminous.

The Marriott STARS or Luminous rates are the same as the best available flexible rate, which can be higher than prepaid rates, member rates, corporate rates, etc., that you may have access to.

In this case, you’ll want to weigh up the savings on those rates and how much you value the benefits of booking through STARS or Luminous. Either way, you can take advantage of the current Amex Offers in the US to get up to a 20% discount on your stay.

Does Buying Gift Cards Work?

While the terms may indicate otherwise, these Marriott offers have historically also worked with Marriott gift cards purchased from a hotel’s front desk. It appears as though the gift card purchases aren’t differentiated from regular hotel room and incidental charges.

Therefore, even if you don’t plan on staying at enough Marriott hotels this winter and spring to maximize the statement credit, you can still show up to a local Marriott property that sells gift cards and purchase the right amount to meet each offer’s threshold.

You’d then be able to use the gift cards towards a future stay after the promotion has ended.

For those of you who play the game in two-player mode or more, take note that most Marriott hotels require that you pay with a credit card that’s in your own name. Indeed, this is something to be aware of if you’re trying to split $1,000+ in gift card purchases across multiple individuals’ cards.

Conclusion

American Express US has two Amex Offers for up to 20% off at Marriott hotels in Canada, the US, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

Most Amex US cardholders should see these offers on their accounts, as long as you’ve held your card for a few weeks and have started seeing Amex Offers roll in.

Be careful about which card you choose to register the card on. Ideally, you’d add it to one of your Marriott co-branded cards to earn the most Bonvoy points and stack with any annual credits on the card.

Don’t forget to register for these Amex Offers on your dashboard before the limited enrolment fills up, and then start planning your Marriott hotel stays before the offers expire.

I will be staying at a luxury bovoy property within the dates, and got the $100 back offer on my US plat. But yea despite that, I still would have to use the giftcard hack to get the value because amex is STILL limiting these offers to US, Canada, Mexico and carribean. Literally title of the offer is “marriot international” , but the offers are not very international. Should mention that in your article as I did screw this up in the past. One was even US only locked and I tried to use it in canada.

Plus it’s only on lux properties, so I can’t pick up the giftcard at my local premium tier hotel.. Need to go to st regis yyz so I can launder the money thru them for my stay in W Melbourne heh.

Not seeing it on any cards. US Amex offers are a bit of a hassle: most cards have 100 offers and won’t display more. So if you add some to the card it frees up space and the new good offer may show.

But you don’t know in advance which card it’s on so you need to click on offers for all cards to free space. Is there a better way to do this?

“show up to a local Marriott property that sells gift cards” – how many gift cards can I rack? I mean – can I buy every day a $250 USD gift card at a participating hotel – to get $50 credit for each and every one of those cards?
I have only one US credit card.

Can I buy more than once a $250usd gc at a Marriott close by?
Will I get yhe $50 credit for every transaction? If so – can the transactions be on the same day?
    Thanks.

Ha, it appeared on only my Business Platinum, which offer no multpilier on hotels booked outside amex’ portal. Did not appear on my Bonvoy Business or my Gold, both of which offer substantial multiplers for such spending. Are others seeing this offer on Bonvoy cards?

I got mine on my US Bonvoy Brilliant. Some saw it on both their Bonvoy Brilliant and Bonvoy Business cards and were in fact able to add it to both cards, though I think that’s the exception rather than the rule.
