New Hilton Honors Promotion: Triple Points on Paid Nights

Hilton Honors often runs many interesting promotions for its members to earn more points.

They’ve just announced their upcoming offer for travel between May 3 and September 6, 2021, and it’s a good one: you can earn up to triple points on all cash bookings.

Register Now for More Nights, More Points

Hilton Honors’s promotion for Summer 2021 is called “More Nights, More Points”, and indeed, the more nights you stay, the more points you’ll earn:

  • Double points on paid stays of one or two nights
  • Triple points on paid stays of three or more nights

You do have to activate the promotion first, but once you’ve done that, there’s no limit to the number of bonus points you can earn. You’ll get the bonus points for all stays where the checkout date falls between May 3 and September 6, 2021, inclusive.

Hilton Honors has many ways to increase the points you’ll earn on bookings and purchases at their properties. The double or triple points only applies to base points; unfortunately it won’t further multiply any bonus points.

For example, when you book at a Hilton property with your Hilton Honors Aspire Card, for every US dollar you spend, you’ll earn:

  • 10 base points as a Hilton Honors member
  • 10–20 bonus points with the “More Nights, More Points” promotion
  • 10 bonus points for having Hilton Honors Diamond status (which you get as an Aspire cardholder)
  • 14 points for using your Aspire Card at a co-branded property

That works out to up to 54 Hilton Honors points per dollar spent at Hilton properties. At our current valuation of 0.5 (USD) cents per point, you could also view this as a 27% discount on the price of your stay.

Of course, not everyone has the Aspire Card – even with annual credits, it’s a steep annual fee to swallow when you consider other premium cards on the market.

Alternatively, if you have the American Express Platinum Card, and you recently took advantage of the elevated offers on the lower-tier Amex Hilton credit cards, you’ll earn:

  • 10 base points as a Hilton Honors member
  • 10–20 bonus points with the “More Nights, More Points” promotion
  • 8 bonus points for having Hilton Honors Gold status (which you get as an Amex Platinum cardholder)
  • 12 points for using your Hilton Honors Surpass or Business Card at a co-branded property

For a total of 50 Hilton Honors points per dollar spent, that’s equivalent to a 25% discount on your stays, and it’s almost the same rate as you’d get with the Aspire Card.

Because the bonus points are based on the amount you spend, you won’t find any arbitrage opportunities – the more you spend, the more you’ll earn. But even for nights priced at US$100 (which is pretty reasonable for peak season travel to popular domestic destinations), you’d earn up to 5,400 points per night.

That’s among the best promotional bonuses we’ve typically seen from Hilton, and it’s well-timed with travel hopefully picking up again over the summer. If you’re looking at a three-day weekend away (or more), this promotion might tip the scales towards booking with Hilton.

At those rates, I’d say this is a great opportunity to make a cash booking for an upcoming trip, and save your hard-earned points for a future award redemption when the active promotions aren’t as favourable.

That would certainly be a better choice if you’re working towards an aspirational Hilton redemption with a high points cost, especially since Hilton Honors points aren’t as easy to come by as other hotel rewards from a Canadian perspective.

Last Chance for Points Unlimited

If you have a hotel booking before the new promotion kicks in on May 3, you can still take advantage of the tail end of the current Points Unlimited promotion, valid for all stays ending on or before May 2.

There’s no limit to the number of qualifying stays or nights you can rack up. After registering for the promotion, you’ll earn:

  • 2,000 bonus points for every stay
  • 5,000 bonus points for every five nights

Also, nights don’t have to be consecutive, on the same booking, or at the same property. You could book five separate one-night stays and effectively earn 3,000 bonus points per night.

With this promotion, award bookings are eligible for the bonus points, which is a rare treat. If that’s how you’ve booked, you can think of the Points Unlimited bonus as a discount on your stay.

However, compared to the upcoming summer promotion, it’s nothing groundbreaking. For a cash booking, I wouldn’t let it sway any last-minute travel plans for the next two weeks.

Conclusion

Hilton Honors is running a summer promotion for triple points on stays of three or more nights. You can register now to activate the promotion, and it’ll be valid for stays from May 3 to September 6, 2021.

This ranks among one of the best promotions that Hilton has offered historically, and I’ll definitely consider it as I eye some domestic summer travel.

Meanwhile, if you have a trip coming up sooner, make sure you register for the current promotion to earn extra points, ending on May 2, 2021.
