Let’s not forget all the cancelled routes from Atlantic Canada in the past two years!
One aspect that is unclear to me is how a carry-on would work for flights connecting to a transatlantic flight. For example, Kelowna-Calgary-Rome booked as UltraBasic. Is a carry-on permitted for the Kelowna-Calgary flight so long as the final flight is transatlantic?
Terrible Westjet Annoucements, Let’s just review:
– Jan 2023 : Westjet consolidates all long haul flights to Calgary, eliminating
– Spring 2023 : Westjet completely acquisition of Sunwing Airlines, then immediately folds Swoop as part of a deal capitulating to union demands.
– October 2023 : Westjet announces increase in checked baggage fees & devalues Silver/Gold preferred & exit row redemption.
– January 2024 : Westjet gets caught adding mystery fee to companion voucher redeptions.
– February 2024 : Westjet announces 2nd increase to baggage fees in 4 months.
– April 2024: Westjet announces ‘Extended Comfort’ option, reducing value proposition of current economy tiers & adding a new revenue stream for WJ.
– June 2024: Westjet announces ‘UltraBasic’ fare, a rebranding of the basic tier that drops carry-on baggage and adds a fee to seat assignment at check-in

It’s disappointing to see what’s happened to a respected western Canadian brand.
I think it’s time to cancel the Westjet mastercard.
They simply removed a few product benefits from “Basic” and renamed it
