The Bonuses

As American Express’s high-end Aeroplan co-branded credit card, the American Express AeroplanPlus Platinum Card currently offers 40,000 Aeroplan miles as a signup bonus upon spending $3,000 in the first three months. The card has an annual fee of $499.

According to the Aeroplan Reward Chart, 40,000 Aeroplan miles would be enough for a round-trip flight from continental North America to Hawaii, or a one-way flight from North America to Europe or South America, all in economy class. You could also use the miles towards a larger redemption, such as an Aeroplan Mini-RTW in business class starting at 150,000 Aeroplan miles.

Since some of American Express’s other high-end products, such as the Platinum Card and the Business Platinum Card, have temporarily reduced their signup offers at the moment, this means that the AeroplanPlus Platinum Card’s signup bonus isn’t too shabby in comparison.

While the annual fee of $499 is relatively high, the card’s additional travel benefits (such as unlimited Maple Leaf Lounge access) can go a long way towards justifying that fee, particularly if you need to earn those 40,000 bonus Aeroplan miles urgently.

This Amex AeroplanPlus Platinum also allows you to add supplementary cardholders for $199 apiece; alternatively, you can also add the lower-tier AeroplanPlus Gold Cards for your authorized users for $50 apiece.

Rewards & Benefits

In terms of the returns on everyday spending, the American Express AeroplanPlus Platinum Card has a very unique structure, offering cardholders:

  • 1.25 Aeroplan miles per dollar spent on the first $25,000 of purchases annually
  • 1.5 Aeroplan miles per dollar spent on purchases over $25,000 annually

There aren’t many credit cards in Canada offering an “accelerator” on the earning rate after reaching a certain spending threshold, so the AeroplanPlus Platinum is quite unique in this regard.

However, it’s debatable whether or not it’s worthwhile to spend $25,000 per year at the 1.25x rate to unlock the accelerator, especially since there are so many other cards on the market whose minimum spending requirements you could unlock with $25,000 in spend. It’ll be up to every cardholder’s preference whether to pursue the accelerated 1.5x earn rate or not – certainly, if you’d prefer to focus on only a few credit cards instead of opening dozens of cards at once, then it would make more sense to consolidate all your spending on the Amex AeroplanPlus Platinum and eventually earn 1.5x Aeroplan miles for all your purchases.

The Amex AeroplanPlus Platinum also offers a few extra benefits to talk about. As a cardholder, you’ll enjoy priority check-in on all Air Canada flights, as well as unlimited Maple Leaf Lounge access when flying with Air Canada. This is one of the only credit cards in Canada with this perk.

The card also offers a second form of lounge access: a complimentary Priority Pass membership. However, the membership doesn’t come with any complimentary visits, meaning that you’ll still need to pay US$32 per visit to a Priority Pass lounge. You’ll probably find it more worthwhile to use the Priority Pass benefits on other cards in the market (like the Amex Platinum Card, which provides unlimited access).

Finally, the card offers an annual Aeroplan Partner Ticket for short-haul travel within North America: when you redeem 15,000 Aeroplan miles for a short-haul round-trip flight on Air Canada within North America, you’ll be able to add a second passenger for free, and only pay the additional taxes and fees. That can be great value, since a short-haul round-trip flight can often cost $300 or more if bought with cash!

Insurance Coverage

As a high-end product, the American Express AeroplanPlus Platinum Card excels in the insurance department. Some examples of its strong coverage include:

  • Emergency medical insurance: Up to $5 million of coverage for the first 15 days of your out-of-province trip, for travellers aged under 65.
  • Delayed and lost baggage insurance: For delayed baggage, up to $1,000 of coverage per insured person if delayed more than 6 hours. For lost or stolen baggage, up to $1,000 of coverage per insured person.
  • Flight delay insurance: Up to $1,000 in coverage if your flight/trip is delayed more than 4 hours
  • Trip cancellation / trip interruption insurance: For Trip Cancellation, up to $1,500 of coverage per insured person, with a maximum of $3,000 for all insured persons, and for Trip Interruption, up to $1,500 of coverage per insured person, with a maximum of $6,000 for all insured persons on the same covered trip.
  • Auto rental collision/loss damage insurance: Comprehensive coverage for up to 48 consecutive days, which can help you save on the insurance fees that the car rental company would otherwise charge.

It’s important to note that these benefits would also apply on Aeroplan reward tickets, as long as you charge the taxes and fees of your booking to your American Express AeroplanPlus Platinum Card.

Additionally, the card also offers Purchase Security and Extended Warranty Protection, covering most eligible items you’ve purchased with your card should they be stolen or damaged within 90 days of purchase, as well as an extended one-year warranty period compared to the manufacturer’s warranty.
