Marriott Bonvoy Grants Status Soft Landing for 2023

Marriott Bonvoy has decided to grant a soft landing for anyone who didn’t re-achieve their Marriott Bonvoy elite status in 2022.  At most, you’ll drop down one tier from the status you enjoyed in 2022 for the remainder of 2023.

Qualification for Marriott Bonvoy elite status follows the calendar year. Members must earn a minimum number of elite qualifying nights to reach various status thresholds, as well as hit a spending threshold for Ambassdor status only.

If you earned or renewed your status in 2022, it will be valid through February 2024.  If you were unable to renew your status in 2022, Marriott Bonvoy has announced that members will be granted a one-tier downgrade until February 2024.

You’ll receive an email later on in January 2023 confirming your one-level drop, but there’s nothing else you need to do to benefit from this soft landing.

Other Ways to Earn Marriott Bonvoy Elite Status

If you find yourself with a lower status than what you have enjoyed in the past few years, the good news is that earning Marriott Bonvoy elite status is now easier than ever.

At the bare minimum, you can get Silver Elite status simply by having a Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card or a Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card.

The American Express Platinum Card or the American Express Business Platinum Card both give you Gold status. There aren’t really many particularly useful benefits at this level, although having some status is always better than nothing.

If you have access to US credit cards, the American Express® Bonvoy Brilliant Card gives you Marriott Platinum status. This is where things start to get meaningful—with free breakfast and 4 pm late-checkout included as part of your benefits.
