Review: JW Marriott Hotel Madrid (2026)

What we loved: The personalized, proactive service; an unbeatable central Madrid location; beautifully designed rooms with a warm, resort-like palette; and a refreshingly self-directed take on wellness that runs through the whole property.

What we didn't love: Terrace sizes with suites vary significantly, so if outdoor space is important to you, be sure to request one with a larger terrace.

How to book: This hotel participates in the Marriott Bonvoy program. Cash rates run $500–900 CAD per night while award redemptions start from around 72,000 points per night and can climb above the 85K Free Night Award ceiling on peak dates.

JW Marriott Hotel Madrid – About the Property

The JW Marriott Hotel Madrid now occupies a building that first opened in 1899 as the flagship store and factory of Álvarez Gómez, Madrid's oldest and most iconic fragrance house.

This fragrant heritage quietly shapes the guest experience through the hotel's wellness-first philosophy. Gentle aromas drift through the public spaces, while an aromatherapy theme carries into the guest rooms.

Opening in 2023, it was JW Marriott's debut in Spain. Spread across seven floors, the property has 139 rooms and 13 suites, with suites having their own terraces. Rooms are spacious by European standards, and their soaring ceilings lend an immediate sense of openness and understated luxury.

Aside from Interior Deluxe rooms that face the courtyard, every room is city-facing. Premium Deluxe rooms are a touch larger than Deluxe rooms, but it's worth noting that even within the same category, rooms will share the same amenities but differ slightly in layout. 

There are also connecting rooms with a private entrance, often a Suite paired with a Deluxe at the corners on every floor, which is a lovely option for families who want space without giving up proximity.

Although the interiors have been completely reimagined, the hotel thoughtfully preserves elements of the building's past. The 19th-century wrought iron columns remain a striking feature of La Botica, while the grand staircase serves as another reminder of the property's rich architectural heritage.

Location

The location is hard to beat. The hotel sits on Plaza de Canalejas, placing you within an easy stroll of many of Madrid's most iconic sights and neighbourhoods.

Puerta del Sol, the buzzing square where many walking tours begin and where the city's shopping district converges, is about a five-minute walk away. Plaza Mayor is around nine minutes on foot, while Mercado de San Miguel, Madrid's lively destination for tapas and small bites, sits just beyond.

Connectivity is just as strong for anything further afield, with Sol metro station about 7 minutes away, with bus stops closer still. 

Getting in from Madrid-Barajas airport was simple. We took an Uber straight to the hotel but if you'd rather skip the wait, taxis run a fixed rate of €33 into the city centre and take about 25 to 30 minutes.

Booking

Paid rates at the JW Marriott Hotel Madrid can run high, with nightly rates between $500 and $900 CAD. I covered our two nights using two 85K Free Night Awards (each worth up to 85,000 points), with a 9,000-point top-up on one night that priced just above the certificate's ceiling. Keep in mind that Bonvoy allows you to add up to 25,000 points to a Free Night Award towards a redemption.

My 85K awards came from U.S. cards, the American Express Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant and the Chase Ritz-Carlton card. Our Canadian Amex Bonvoy cards give a 35K Free Night Award at renewal (which can be topped up to 60,000 points), but wouldn't be enough to cover this particular property. 

Ahead of the stay I applied Nightly Upgrade Awards, which cleared a few days prior to arrival, upgrading our booked Deluxe King, City View to a Signature Suite, 1 King, Skyline View with Terrace. The possibility of having a confirmed-in-advance upgrade is a nice milestone award for Bonvoy elite members who achieve 50 and 75 elite nights.

Check-In Experience

My husband and I arrived by Uber. Although our driver dropped us off across the street, the bellmen, impeccably dressed in sharp blue and grey suits, immediately spotted us and headed over to assist with our luggage.

We walked into a spacious lobby bar and were swiftly escorted to the check-in desk. 

Here, extremely courteous staff welcomed us as Marriott Bonvoy Platinum members while another offered us complimentary bottles of water. Elite benefits were handled exactly the way elite recognition should be, warmly and without having to ask.

• Welcome amenity: The choice of 1,000 points per stay or 10 euros food & beverage credit was offered. Awaiting us in our room was also a box of traditional violet candies, an iconic Madrid confection once favoured by Spanish royalty. 
  
• Late check-out: 4pm late check-out was offered proactively at check-in
• Breakfast: Because the hotel has no executive lounge, we were offered the choice of daily breakfast for two at Botánicos Álvarez or 750 Bonvoy points per night. We opted for breakfast. 

Throughout our stay, the lobby staff struck the perfect balance of being proactive and attentive without ever hovering. They were always ready to help with bags or doors and would often check in if we appeared to need assistance. 

The concierge was equally helpful, providing excellent dining recommendations and tips on where to shop for souvenirs.

Signature Suite, Skyline View with Terrace

Like the rest of the hotel, the Signature Suite exuded a warm, resort-like feel, with a soothing palette of beiges and light browns, natural wood furnishings, brass accents, and soaring ceilings that made the space feel even more expansive. 

While the building's century-old heritage meant floor-to-ceiling windows weren't possible, the suite still welcomed plenty of natural light, and the blackout curtains ensured complete darkness when it was time to sleep.

The suite is divided into two distinct spaces: a bedroom and a slightly raised sitting nook. Furnished with a large smart TV, comfortable upholstered seating, and a table large enough for casual dining, it was an inviting place to relax throughout the day.

Rather than occupying a dedicated cocktail cabinet, the minibar is discreetly integrated into the buffet dresser.

There's also a dedicated wooden desk with wall-mounted charging outlets tucked neatly underneath, making it an ideal setup for anyone needing to catch up on a bit of work.

The bedroom features a king bed with a large faux leather upholstered headboard, flanked by stone-topped nightstands with charging outlets on either side. Opposite the bed is another TV, positioned for comfortable viewing, along with the door to the terrace, which also allows plenty of natural light to fill the room.

The terrace itself was a little underwhelming. It was quite small, with just a single chair, making it less of an outdoor living space and more suited to stepping outside for a breath of fresh air than spending an afternoon lounging. The high solid railing also obscured most of the view while seated, so it was only when standing that you could take in the city skyline.

Spacious and spa-like, the bathroom was a highlight in its own right. It featured a double marble vanity, a deep soaker tub, and a rain shower with excellent water pressure that heated up quickly, something frequent travellers know is rarer than it should be.

There were several lighting options to help set the mood, thick terry bathrobes and slippers, and toiletries from London-based Aromatherapy Associates. 

A thoughtful nod to the building's fragrant heritage is the in-room aromatherapy kit by Spanish luxury brand Alqvimia. Paired with a diffuser, it offers a choice of 10 essential oil blends designed to relax the body, calm the mind, and uplift the spirit.

The closet provided adequate storage space for belongings, while also housing a safe, ironing facilities, and a yoga mat and block discreetly tucked into the corner. It's an easy detail to overlook, but one that speaks to the hotel's refreshingly self-directed approach to wellness. 

Rather than adhering to a fixed schedule of classes, guests can scan a QR code to access a library of on-demand yoga and meditation sessions whenever it suits them. 

Whether you want a full practice or just a few minutes of mindfulness, you can do so entirely on your own schedule, with the terrace providing a peaceful spot to unroll the mat and enjoy a quiet session outdoors.

To round out the day, turndown service includes a soothing pillow spray and a pair of chocolates, a thoughtful touch before settling in for the night.

Deluxe Room, City View with Balcony

We also had a look at a Deluxe Room, City View with Balcony, which carries the same design language as the suite: the warm beiges, natural wood furnishings, brass accents, and soaring ceilings. It's naturally more compact than the Signature Suite, but still spacious by European standards, offering a cozy yet luxurious vibe.

Food and Drink

The hotel has two dining venues. Botánicos Álvarez serves breakfast daily from 6:30–11:00am before transitioning to lunch and dinner service.

Breakfast combines a continental buffet with a small à la carte menu of freshly prepared egg dishes, pancakes, and crêpes.

The buffet featured a well-curated selection of freshly pressed juices, seasonal fruit, yogurts, cereals, charcuterie, Spanish omelette, smoked fish, and salads. 

While not the most elaborate spread you'll find at a luxury hotel, the selection was thoughtfully curated and offered more than enough variety for a satisfying start to the day.

We also enjoyed a casual lunch at La Botica, the lobby lounge and bar, which was easily my favourite space in the hotel. 

Open, elegant, and inviting, it strikes the perfect balance between luxury and comfort, with plush sofas, upholstered armchairs, and low coffee tables that encourage you to settle in and stay awhile. As the day winds down, it's equally well suited to lingering over evening drinks in a relaxed, sophisticated setting.

The food punched well above lobby-lounge expectations: the beef tartare and ibérico ham were both outstanding, paired with the Russian salad and their signature Sando sandwiches, made for a perfect cultural food experience. 

The drinks were excellent as well. My Basil Berry Punch was fruity and refreshing without being overly sweet.

Service was exceptional throughout. When I accidentally spilled part of my drink, our waiter immediately cleaned up the table and, without us asking, replaced it with a fresh one. It was a small gesture, but one that perfectly reflected the hotel's thoughtful approach to hospitality.

Other Facilities

If you prefer a more communal wellness experience, the JW Garden hosts short 10-to-15-minute yoga and meditation sessions twice a day, which is an easy, unintimidating way to fold a little calm into your morning or evening. 

The midday practice is enhanced by the gentle tones of Tibetan singing bowls, creating a meditative atmosphere. In the evening, the emphasis shifts to guided breathing techniques, with the session ending over a relaxing cup of tea.

Down in the basement you'll find the fitness centre and the Elysium Spa. The spa is small but offers facials and body treatments. 

The 24/7 gym is a distinctive space with exposed brick walls and a surprisingly spacious layout for a city-centre European hotel, complemented by a solid range of free weights and cardio machines.

Conclusion

The JW Marriott Hotel Madrid strikes a rare balance, combining the warmth and tranquillity of a luxury resort with the convenience of a city-centre location. 

From its thoughtfully designed, wellness-focused rooms to its genuinely attentive service and prime setting just steps from many of Madrid's most iconic sights, it delivers an experience that feels both restorative and effortlessly connected to the city. 

Whether you book with cash or points, it's an easy hotel to recommend.
