JAL's distance-based award chart delivers exceptional value on short- and medium-haul premium cabin flights, often beating zone-based competitors by thousands of miles. Three free stopovers on partner awards and $0 fuel surcharges on many oneworld bookings add further value. Primarily earnable through US credit cards (Bilt, Capital One) or by flying JAL and oneworld partners.

JAL Mileage Bank is the loyalty program of Japan Airlines, a founding member of the oneworld alliance. While JAL Mileage Bank is not well-known among Canadian travellers, it offers some of the most compelling sweet spots in the points and miles world – including British Airways business class for 42,000 miles with low surcharges, Air France business class with $0 fuel surcharges, and the industry’s most generous stopover policy allowing up to 3 stopovers on a single partner award.
The catch? There is no direct Canadian credit card transfer partner. JAL Mileage Bank is primarily accessible through US programs, making it a niche but powerful tool for Canadians who hold US credit cards.
Since there is no direct Canadian credit card transfer partner, earning JAL miles requires access to US programs or hotel transfers.
Since mid-2025, Bilt Rewards transfers to JAL Mileage Bank at a 1:1 ratio. This is the most efficient transfer partner for JAL miles. Bilt points are earned through rent payments (up to 100,000 points per year) and the Bilt Mastercard’s bonus categories.
Capital One transfers to JAL at a 1,000:750 base ratio. Capital One periodically offers 30% transfer bonuses that bring the ratio closer to 1:1.
Marriott Bonvoy transfers to JAL at 3:1, with a 10,000-mile bonus per 60,000 Bonvoy points transferred. This is generally not recommended due to the poor ratio, but can make sense if you have a large Bonvoy balance with no better use.
Unlike programs such as Aeroplan or British Airways, JAL Mileage Bank has no transfer partnership with any Canadian bank program. Canadians who want to accumulate JAL miles need access to US-issued credit cards.
JAL uses a distance-based partner award chart with 14 distance bands, ranging from 12,000 miles in business class for flights under 1,000 miles to 150,000 miles for ultra-long-haul flights over 34,000 miles. There is no peak or off-peak pricing on partner awards.
JAL Mileage Bank allows up to 3 stopovers on a single partner award itinerary – the most generous stopover policy of any major frequent flyer program. With up to 6 segments allowed, you can build complex multi-city trips at a single award price. This is the program’s killer feature.

JAL Mileage Bank’s distance-based chart creates several standout redemptions, particularly on medium-haul premium cabin flights.
This is one of JAL Mileage Bank’s best sweet spots. A British Airways business class flight from the US East Coast to London costs 42,000 JAL miles with fuel surcharges of approximately $210 (CAD). Compare this to booking through BA’s own program, where surcharges alone can exceed $600.
Air France business class from New York to Paris costs 42,000 JAL miles with zero fuel surcharges. This is one of the cleanest premium cabin redemptions available – all-in cost is just the miles plus minimal airport taxes of ~$5 (USD).
JetBlue’s Mint business class on transcontinental US routes can be booked through JAL Mileage Bank for 42,000 miles with taxes of just $5.60. Mint offers lie-flat seats, excellent food, and is considered one of the best domestic business class products in the US.

Combine the 3-stopover policy with the distance-based chart and you can build extraordinary itineraries. Example: New York → London (stopover) → Tokyo (stopover) → Hong Kong (stopover) → Singapore, all priced at the total distance of the routing.
JAL Mileage Bank has some restrictive policies that are important to understand before accumulating miles:
The family-only booking restriction is a significant limitation – you cannot book awards for friends or unrelated travel companions. This makes JAL Mileage Bank best suited for solo travellers or families.
JAL Mileage Bank is a specialist program that rewards planning with exceptional value. The distance-based chart prices short- and medium-haul premium cabin flights very competitively, the 3-stopover policy enables complex itineraries no other program can match, and specific sweet spots like Air France J with $0 surcharges and BA J for ~$210 are best-in-class. The lack of a Canadian transfer partner limits accessibility, but for Canadians with Bilt or Capital One points, JAL Mileage Bank deserves a place in your loyalty toolkit.
