Earn Up to 30,000 Scene+ Points with the New Tangerine Rewards World Elite®* Mastercard®*

If you've looked at Tangerine's card lineup over the years, you'll know it has always lived in the same lane. No annual fee, cash back, decent but not premium. That just changed.
Tangerine has launched the Tangerine® Rewards World Elite®* Mastercard®*, its first paid annual-fee card and the first to plug into Scene+, the loyalty program owned by parent company Scotiabank. It comes with a $120 (CAD) annual fee, a welcome bonus of 30,000 Scene+ points, and four complimentary DragonPass lounge visits per year.
This is a notable shift for Tangerine, and another sign that Scotiabank is broadening the Scene+ ecosystem. Let's take a detailed look at the welcome offer, earning rates, fees, perks, and benefits.
The Welcome Offer
New cardholders can earn 30,000 Scene+ points by spending $3,000 in net purchases within 90 days of account opening. Based on Scene+'s 1 cent per point valuation, that works out to roughly $300 in value.
To qualify, you'll need to apply by October 30, 2026 and be new to this specific card product. Payments, cash advances, balance transfers, interest, fees, and insurance premiums don't count toward the minimum spend.
There's also an annual bonus of 10,000 Scene+ points (worth about $100) once your spending reaches $30,000 in a cardmember year. If you plan to put serious volume on the card, that's a recurring top-up every anniversary.
Relative to the $120 (CAD) annual fee, the welcome offer alone more than covers the first-year cost, and leaves you with a healthy points balance to work with.
Earning Rates
Everyday spending on the card earns:
- 1.5 Scene+ points per dollar on three categories you select from a list of 13
- 1 Scene+ point per dollar on all other purchases
The 13 eligible accelerated categories include groceries, restaurants, gas, entertainment, furniture, hotels and motels, drug stores, recurring bill payments, home improvement, public transportation and parking, E-Games, fitness and sports clubs, and foreign currency spend.

You can swap your three bonus categories every 90 days, which is useful if your spending patterns shift seasonally. The flexibility is the real pitch here.
It's worth noting that the 1.5x rate is lower than what you'll find on some of the top points-earning cards in Canada. The Scotiabank Gold American Express Card, for example, pulls 5x Scene+ on groceries and dining. So if your goal is to max out earning in any single category, this isn't the card to do it with.
Where the flexibility comes into its own is for households with varied spending. A family that spends heavily on groceries, drug stores, and hockey lessons (fitness and sports clubs) can hit 1.5x across all three categories year-round, which more rigid cards can't match for a broad-spending household.
Scene+ Points and Redemption Options
Scene+ sits in the fixed-value camp of Canadian rewards programs, similar to how TD Rewards and RBC Avion behave for non-transfer redemptions. Points are worth approximately 1 cent each, with multiple redemption paths available.
The most flexible option is Points for Travel, where you can apply your Scene+ balance against any travel purchase already charged to your Scotiabank or Tangerine card. This retroactive redemption mechanic is what makes Scene+ stand out from closed-portal competitors like TD Rewards, which require booking through Expedia.
Other redemption options include Cineplex movies, groceries at Sobeys and Empire banners, fuel at Shell (more on that below), and a Points for Credit option that lets you apply points against your account balance.
For points purists, Scene+ doesn't offer outsized redemption value the way Aeroplan or American Express Membership Rewards can when transferred to airline partners. But for Canadians who prefer simplicity over optimization, 1 cent per point against any travel expense is a clean proposition.
Perks and Benefits
Beyond lounge access, the card comes with a few additional travel-related benefits worth calling out.
Shell Partnership
When you link your Tangerine card to a Shell Go+ account, you'll get 3¢/L off all fuel grades at participating Shell stations. Through March 6, 2027, you'll also get an additional 4¢/L off V-Power premium fuel.

On top of the discount, you'll earn 1 Scene+ point per litre pumped at Shell (worth about 1¢/L), capped at 1,000 litres per month per account.
For drivers who regularly fill up with premium fuel, the combined savings work out to roughly 8¢/L once you count the discount plus the Scene+ value. On a typical 50-litre fill-up, that's about $4 in value, or around $200 per year if you fill up weekly.
Keep in mind that the Scene+ partnership at Shell is currently only live in Alberta. The nationwide rollout is scheduled for May 26, 2026, at which point drivers in the rest of the country will be able to take advantage of these savings. For the full breakdown, see our coverage of the Scene+ launch at Shell in Alberta.
Mastercard Collection Benefits
As a World Elite Mastercard, the card also unlocks access to the Mastercard Collection, which offers a handful of lifestyle perks. These include Cirque du Soleil ticket offers, a 3 GB complimentary global roaming plan via FlexiRoam (once per calendar year), and a 30% discount on H&R Block tax filing services.
These are the kind of perks I'd file under "nice to have if you happen to use them" rather than major drivers of card value.
Lounge Access
Cardholders get four complimentary DragonPass lounge visits per year through the Mastercard Travel Pass program. Additional visits run $32 (USD) per person, and bringing a guest counts as two visits from your annual allotment.

Four passes isn't going to move the needle for frequent flyers, but for the $120 (CAD) fee, it's a reasonable inclusion. For context, the CIBC Aventura® Visa Infinite* Card also offers four passes at a similar fee tier.
Travel Insurance
The travel insurance package is solid for a card at this fee level:
- Travel emergency medical: Up to $5,000,000 for cardholders under 65, good for the first 15 days of a trip
- Trip cancellation: Up to $2,000 per person, $5,000 per trip
- Trip interruption: Up to $2,000 per person, $25,000 per trip
- Rental car collision damage waiver: Primary coverage on vehicles up to $65,000 MSRP, up to 31 days
- Mobile device insurance: Up to $1,000 per claim
- Purchase protection and extended warranty
To activate trip cancellation and interruption coverage, you'll need to charge at least 75% of eligible trip costs to the card or redeem Scene+ points.
The $5 million travel medical limit is at the high end of what you'll find on premium Canadian cards, matching coverage you'd expect from cards with fees well above $120 (CAD).
Conclusion
Tangerine's move into the premium-card space is a clear signal that Scotiabank wants to broaden Scene+'s reach beyond its existing Scotiabank-branded roster. The flexible category earning and solid insurance package are the real story here, rather than the headline welcome bonus or lounge access.
If you're an existing Tangerine banking customer, or a household with varied spending across the 13 bonus categories, the first-year math works cleanly: $300 from the welcome bonus, $200 in lounge value, and a fee that washes out with a modest spend bonus. If you're already building a points strategy around American Express Membership Rewards or Aeroplan, the 1.5x earning rate won't move the needle, and Scene+ doesn't transfer to airline partners the way MR points do.
I'll be watching to see whether Scotiabank pushes this into any richer promotional territory in the months ahead. A boosted earning category during a Scene+ Points Days promotion, or a stronger welcome bonus closer to year-end, would make it a much more interesting proposition than the launch offer alone suggests.
