Etihad Launches First-Ever Nonstop Flights Between Abu Dhabi and Calgary

Etihad Airways has announced a new nonstop route between Abu Dhabi (AUH) and Calgary (YYC), marking the first-ever direct air link between the UAE and Calgary – and the only nonstop connection between the Middle East and Western Canada.

Service is set to begin on November 3, 2026, operating four times weekly with a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

For Canadians based in Calgary, this finally adds a Gulf carrier and a one-stop connection to much of Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia.

For travellers in Abu Dhabi and across Etihad’s network, Calgary becomes a new gateway to Alberta and the Canadian Rockies – Banff, Lake Louise, and all the scenery you usually see on Canadian tourism posters.

Abu Dhabi–Calgary Flight Schedule

According to Etihad’s announcement, the schedule will be as follows (all times local):

Both flights operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays, on the Boeing 787-9.

Expect a block time of roughly 14 hours in each direction, putting this among Etihad’s longest routes worldwide.

This new route complements Etihad’s existing North American services to Toronto (YYZ), New York (JFK), and Chicago (ORD), plus Charlotte (CLT), which is due to launch in March.

A New Corridor Between the Gulf and the Rockies

Etihad is very clearly selling this as more than just another long-haul route. The airline frames Abu Dhabi and Calgary as two global energy and innovation hubs, adding a direct corridor for corporate travel and trade between the GCC and Western Canada.

From a Canadian perspective, the route is interesting on a few levels:

    • Business & energy: Calgary-based firms gain a nonstop link to the UAE and, via Abu Dhabi, onward connections across the Gulf, Africa, India, and beyond.
    • Tourism inbound to Canada: Etihad can now market Western Canada’s ski resorts, summer hiking, and national parks directly to its global customer base, funnelling traffic to Calgary as a gateway to the Rockies.
    • Outbound leisure from Canada: Travellers in Alberta and Western Canada finally get a one-stop option to places like the Maldives, Seychelles, or Sri Lanka via Abu Dhabi, instead of backtracking through Toronto or Vancouver.

In short, this fills a pretty obvious network gap: until now, there hasn’t been a nonstop flight linking Western Canada with the Middle East.

What to Expect Onboard Etihad’s 787-9

The route will be flown by Etihad’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, featuring the carrier’s latest Business and Economy cabins.

Etihad currently operates multiple 787-9 configurations, all of which include a fully flat 1-2-1 Business Class with direct aisle access:

    • Some aircraft have 28 Business Class seats in a single cabin (no First Class).
    • Others feature 8 First Class suites at the front, plus 28 Business Class seats behind.
    • A third layout has 32 Business Class seats and no First Class, again in a 1-2-1 configuration.

Business Class comes in Etihad’s “Business Studio” style, with a mix of forward- and rear-facing seats in a staggered layout. Every seat goes fully flat, and the better window seats feel almost like mini-suites thanks to the shell and storage around you.

Etihad hasn’t confirmed which exact 787-9 layout we’ll see on Calgary, but realistically, you should expect a two-cabin 787-9 (Business + Economy) at launch.

A First Class-equipped 787-9 is technically possible, but it would be a pleasant surprise rather than something to bank on.

How to Book Abu Dhabi–Calgary with Points

Etihad has already loaded the flights for sale on its own website, but partner award availability tends to lag behind cash schedules – and early reports from our community suggest that award seats haven’t yet shown up on common partners.

Here’s how this route will likely play in the points world for Canadian travellers.

    1. Etihad Guest

From Canada, you can transfer American Express Membership Rewards points to Etihad Guest at a rate of 1:0.75 (1,000 MR = 750 Etihad Guest miles).

Etihad recently overhauled its own award pricing, and long-haul Business Class between North America and Abu Dhabi now starts at around 120,000 Etihad Guest miles one-way, with First Class significantly higher.

    So, very roughly:

    • 120,000 Etihad miles160,000 Amex MR Canada points at the 1:0.75 ratio.

That’s steep, and you’ll want to shop carefully against cash fares and alternative programs before you move points over, especially since Etihad Guest transfers can take time and are one-way.

    2. Aeroplan

Etihad is a partner of Aeroplan, and as of March 2025, Etihad awards price under the dynamic “Air Canada and select partners” chart rather than the fixed-partner chart.

    The key implications:

    • Business Class awards on Etihad are back in Aeroplan – including long-haul flights, but
    • Pricing is now dynamic and often significantly higher than the old partner chart, sometimes matching or exceeding what you’d pay booking directly with Etihad Guest.

When award space on Abu Dhabi–Calgary eventually appears, expect:

    • High, variable pricing in Business Class, especially on peak dates.
    • Better value if you can position to other Etihad routes or mix in classic fixed-chart Star Alliance partners instead.

It’s still a useful option, particularly if you earn Aeroplan points easily in Canada, but it probably won’t be the cheapest way to fly this route in a premium cabin.

    3. American Airlines AAdvantage

For many travellers, American Airlines AAdvantage remains one of the more attractive ways to book Etihad, especially for premium cabins.

In Canada, you can access AAdvantage by transferring RBC Avion points at a 1:0.7 ratio (5,000 Avion = 3,500 AAdvantage miles).

From time to time, RBC also runs transfer bonuses to AAdvantage – for example, a recent 15% bonus promotion boosted the effective rate to 1:0.8.

Historically, AAdvantage has offered more reasonable pricing for Etihad premium cabins than either Etihad Guest or Aeroplan’s new dynamic charts, particularly on long-haul routes to Abu Dhabi and beyond.

Under the current AAdvantage partner award chart, flights between Canada and the Middle East start at 40,000 miles in economy, 70,000 miles in business, and 115,000 miles in First each way, so we’d expect Abu Dhabi–Calgary to follow those levels once Etihad opens up partner award space.

So, once award space opens up on the new Calgary route, there’s a good chance that:

    • AAdvantage redemptions will be one of the better value plays,
    • Especially if you can align with a transfer bonus window, and
    • Provided American actually gets access to a decent number of Etihad seats on this route.

For now, though, this is more of a “watch this space” situation than something you can book today.

    Conclusion

Etihad’s new Abu Dhabi–Calgary route is a big win for Western Canada and for anyone in the Etihad or Aeroplan ecosystem who’s based out west.

Starting November 3, 2026, Calgarians get a four-times-weekly Dreamliner service to the UAE, plus one-stop access to a huge network across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia – and Abu Dhabi gains a new doorway to the Rockies.

From a points perspective, it’s unlikely to be a cheap redemption, especially in Business Class, but the combination of Etihad Guest, Aeroplan, and AAdvantage gives Canadians multiple angles to work with once award space appears.
