At $89, this card undercuts every other premium airline co-brand on the Canadian market by a meaningful margin. The Aeroplan and WestJet premium cards all sit north of $120, and some approach $599. If you're flying United or Star Alliance with any regularity, the break-even math here is easy to defend.
The welcome offer is modest in absolute terms, but the structure is friendly – half the miles land at activation before you've spent a dollar, and the $3,000 spend threshold is lower than most Canadian cards. The recurring 5,000-mile Renewal Bonus is a nice touch that keeps the card earning its keep year after year.
| Category | Rate |
|---|---|
| United and Star Alliance Flights | 1.25× |
| Dining | 1× |
| Groceries | 1× |
| Everything Else | 0.75× |
The 0.75x base rate on non-category spending is lower than you'll find on flat-rate cards, so this works best as a targeted card: pair it with a strong everyday earner and route your United bookings, groceries, and dining here.
The cardholder discount on award flights and the expanded Saver Award inventory are two of MileagePlus's most underrated features. Non-cardholders regularly hit 'no saver availability' walls on Polaris and Star Alliance partners, while cardholders often see seats on the exact same flights – that access alone can justify the annual fee if you're strategic.
Canadians have historically booked United flights through Aeroplan. This card opens a second door: earn MileagePlus miles directly and book United metal without routing through Aeroplan at all. For sweet spots like intra-Asia on ANA or transatlantic on Lufthansa, that's a welcome alternative.

Bonus Miles Partner NetworkThe free first checked bag is table stakes for airline co-brands, but the fact that it extends to companions on the same reservation makes it especially useful for families and pairs. At $35 USD per bag each way on United, two people flying a round-trip recoup more than half the annual fee in bag fees alone.
The NEXUS credit is worth up to $120 USD every five years, which amortizes to roughly $24 USD per year – a modest but real offset against the annual fee if you're due for a renewal. The Group 2 boarding priority is mid-tier (United has several boarding groups ahead of Group 2) but still gets you overhead bin space ahead of most of the cabin.
The secured card variant is genuinely unusual. Canadians who are newer to credit or rebuilding can earn MileagePlus miles and get the travel perks from day one, rather than being locked out of the airline rewards ecosystem entirely. It's the kind of product structure that reflects Neo's consumer-first positioning.
