Chase Aeroplan Card: 10x Points on International Purchases

The Chase Aeroplan Card has launched a new promotion, which can be a great opportunity for Canadian-based cardholders to pick up an easy 15,000 Aeroplan points.

From July 1 to September 30, 2022, all cardholders will earn a total of 10x Aeroplan points when using their Chase Aeroplan Card for international purchases – up to $1,500 in spend (all figures in USD) or 15,000 Aeroplan points earned.

Keep in mind that “international purchases” include all charges that are made from outside the United States, so all purchases made in Canada would count.

10x Points on International Purchases, Up to 15,000 Points

Between July 1 and September 30, 2022, all international purchases made on the Chase Aeroplan Card will earn 10x Aeroplan points, up to a total of 15,000 Aeroplan points (equivalent to $1,500 in spend). All cardholders are eligible and no registration is required.

It’s important to note that the 10x bonus points is inclusive of, rather than in addition to, the card’s regular earning rates.

Since the Chase Aeroplan Card normally earns 3x points on groceries, dining, and Air Canada flights and vacations, there will be a bonus of 7x points added on to these purchases. Meanwhile, all other spending, which ordinarily earns a base rate of 1x points, will earn an additional 9x points for a total of 10x points.

For clarity on which regions count as “international purchases”, the following regions are excluded from the promotion:

  • All 50 US states
  • Washington DC
  • Guam
  • Puerto Rico
  • U.S. Virgin Islands
  • U.S. military installations

Notably, purchases made through third-party payment accounts or digital wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay, or PayPal) are also excluded from this offer, so make sure to pull out the physical card when making purchases.

Furthermore, purchases must be posted to the account by the deadline in order to qualify, and purchases made on supplementary cards also do not count.

Spend $1,500 in Canada to Maximize the Bonus

As you can see, Canadian purchases do indeed qualify as an international region on the Chase Aeroplan Card, so all Canadian-based cardholders can simply spend $1,500 (USD) on the card at home this summer to earn the maximum Aeroplan bonus.

Notably, the Chase Aeroplan Card has no foreign transaction fees, so spending in Canada and the rest of the world is frictionless in terms of exchange rates.

The most optimal earning route would be to only spend on categories that don’t include a 3x multiplier, since you’d earn an incremental bonus of 13,500 Aeroplan points this way based on the incremental 9x multiplier.

If you were to spend a portion of the $1,500 in a 3x category such as groceries, dining, or Air Canada flights and vacations, then you’d “only” earn 7x points as a bonus and the remaining 3x represents points that you would’ve earned on the card anyway.

Getting the Chase Aeroplan Card

For those looking to pick up the card, note that the Chase Aeroplan Card is available only in the US. For Canadian-based Aeroplan members, the card would only be accessible if you’ve embarked on the path of getting US credit cards.

The Chase Aeroplan Card is also subject to Chase’s “5/24 rule”, which means that you’re unlikely to be approved if you’ve opened five or more US-issued credit cards over the past 24 months.

As for the signup offer, the Chase Aeroplan Card is currently offering a Welcome Flight Reward Certificate worth 50,000 Aeroplan points upon spending $3,000 in the first three months. Furthermore, you’ll earn a 10x bonus on all travel and dining in the first six months up to 51,000 bonus points.

There’s also an arguably superior in-path offer floating around, which gives you 20,000 Aeroplan points upon spending $1,000 in the first three months, a Welcome Flight Reward Certificate worth 60,000 Aeroplan points upon spending $10,000 in the first six months, and a $250 statement credit upon first purchase.

Earn enough Aeroplan points to fly Oman Air First Class

Both of these welcome bonuses would stack with the ongoing 10x points on international purchases offer through September 30, so now would be a great time to apply for the card if you’re eligible for it.

Conclusion

From July 1 to September 30, 2022, Chase Aeroplan Card holders will earn a total of 10x points by using their Chase Aeroplan Card internationally outside of the United States.

Canadians who hold this card can therefore earn 15,000 Aeroplan points (technically an incremental amount of up to 13,500 points) simply by spending $1,500 at home this summer.

To earn the maximum bonus points, be sure to spend on non-categorized purchases to earn 9x bonus points compared to 7x bonus points for groceries, dining, and Air Canada purchases.
