How Does the Marriott Bonvoy Multiply Points Offer Work?

Marriott Bonvoy has introduced a new way for members to stockpile points: the Multiply Points Offer.

Instead of buying set amounts of points, you can now multiply points earned from a recent stay, sometimes up to four times, at a discounted rate.

Here’s how the Marriott Bonvoy Multiply Points Offer works, including who’s eligible, how much it costs, and whether it’s a good deal or not.

What Is the Marriott Bonvoy Multiply Points Offer?

The Multiply Points Offer gives Marriott Bonvoy members the option to buy up to four times the points earned on a recent Qualifying Paid Stay at a discounted rate.

Rather than simply buying points off the shelf, Marriott customizes offers based on your real stay history. The promotion refreshes monthly, so you’ll see new options as you complete more paid stays.

For example, I earned 6,070 points on my a recent stay, and I’m seeing the following options:

  • Double (2x) your points to 12,140 at a 15% discount
  • Triple (3x) your points to 18,210 at a 20% discount
  • Quadruple (4x) your points to 24,280 at a 25% discount

Where Can You Access the Multiply Points Offer?

You can check your personalized offer by logging into the Marriott Multiply Points page.

Offers are customized based on your most recent eligible stay. If you’ve completed a paid stay but don’t see an offer, it could mean the system hasn’t updated yet or your stay didn’t qualify.

Who’s Eligible for the Multiply Points Offer?

To qualify for the Multiply Points Offer, you must:

  • Be an active Marriott Bonvoy member.
  • Have completed a Qualifying Paid Stay in the past 12 months.
  • Have earned at least 1,000 points on that stay.

New Marriott Bonvoy members can also participate after 30 days of enrollment, provided they meet the minimum points earned.

However, some properties are excluded. Stays at The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy, and Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy properties aren’t eligible.

Which Points Are Eligible to Multiply?

The following points are eligible:

  • Base Points earned from the room rate
  • Elite Bonus Points awarded based on status
  • Welcome Bonus Points from elite benefits
  • Points earned from incidental charges points (e.g., dining, spa services)

Points that are purchased, gifted, transferred, or refunded are not eligible for multiplication.

How Much Does It Cost to Multiply Points with Marriott Bonvoy?

Points are priced at $12.50 (USD) per 1,000 points (or 1.25 cents per point) before any applicable discounts.

The discount percentage depends on whether you choose to double, triple, or quadruple your points, with larger multipliers offering better value.

Taxes (GST, HST, or QST) will also apply if you’re making the purchase from Canada, and everything is charged in USD—so make sure you factor in currency conversion fees if you’re using a Canadian credit card.

What Is the Purchase Limit?

You can purchase up to 100,000 points per calendar year through the Multiply Points Offer.

This limit of 100,000 points is separate from the annual limit you’d face with traditional Buy Points or Gift Points promotions offered by Marriott.

In other words, Multiply Points purchases do not count against the regular Marriott points buying cap.

Which Credit Card Should You Use to Buy Points?

Since Marriott sells points through Points.com, these purchases don’t code as travel.

That means you won’t earn bonus points for travel-related spending, and also Marriott Bonvoy co-branded credit cards won’t offer any extra earn rate either.

Because the purchase is charged in USD, the best practice is to use a US credit card to complete the transaction.

This avoids unnecessary currency conversion fees and, for Canadians, could help you avoid being charged GST/HST/QST on top of your purchase if you have a US billing address.

Ideally, you should use a US credit card where you’re trying to meet a minimum spending requirement, or use a card that offers a high return on everyday purchases.

If you must use a Canadian card, make sure to pay with one that has no foreign transaction fees, such as the Scotiabank Passport® Visa Infinite* Card or the Scotiabank Gold American Express® Card.

Is the Marriott Bonvoy Multiply Points Offer Worth It?

As always, it depends.

If you have an immediate plan to redeem for a high-value stay or to stretch your balance with a long stay at low points rate properties, buying discounted points through this offer could be a smart move.

Think properties like the St. Regis Maldives, Al Maha Dubai, or budget-friendly redemptions at lower points rate hotels for longer trips.

However, if you’re multiplying points just for the sake of hoarding, you’re better off saving your money, as Marriott Bonvoy points have been steadily and consistently devalued over the past few years.

Always compare the cost of purchasing points versus paying cash for your intended stay. If the math doesn’t work out in your favour, pass on the multiplier.

In my honest opinion, Multiply Points Offers are convenient, but they rarely offer the best bang for your buck.

Marriott Bonvoy occasionally runs Buy Points promotions with bonuses of 40% or 45%, which work out to purchasing points for approximately 0.89 cents per point and 0.86 cents per point respectively.

In comparison, even with the maximum 4x multiplier under the Multiply Points offer, you’re still paying around 0.94 cents per point.

Generally, it’s better to wait for one of these traditional Buy Points promotions if you’re planning ahead to top up your balance. We’ve even seen bonus promotions as high as 60% in the past, making those sales a much better deal overall.

However, if you need an immediate top-up for a time-sensitive redemption, the Multiply Points Offer can still be worth considering.

Conclusion

The Marriott Bonvoy Multiply Points Offer adds an interesting angle to traditional points purchases.

It’s not always a no-brainer, but when timed right, it can be a useful tool to unlock luxury stays or stretch your points further for longer trips.

As always, it’s wise to stick to an earn and burn strategy, especially with Marriott Bonvoy points, which tend to get devalued more frequently than other loyalty currencies.

Before pulling the trigger, make sure you have a clear redemption plan and double-check the math against cash rates or upcoming Buy Points promotions.

After all, the only thing worse than wasting money is multiplying points you might never actually use.
