Marriott International appears to be setting its sights on the outdoors, as it announces deals with two outdoor industry leaders.

Marriott International has announced the expansion of its outdoor-focused accommodations, with the acquisition of Postcard Cabins, formerly known as Getaway Outposts, and the long-term agreement with outdoor hospitality brand Trailborn.

Postcard Cabins offers tiny cabins nestled in nature across the US, while Trailborn features more than 550 rooms in iconic outdoor destinations in the states. It’s expected both properties will be integrated into Marriott’s booking platforms in 2025.

Marriott International has made its move into the outdoor hospitality market with the acquisition of Postcard Cabins (formerly Getaway Outposts) and a new partnership with Trailborn, the outdoor hospitality brand that specializes in extraordinary outdoor destinations.

Both moves bolster Marriott’s plans to launch an outdoor-focused collection in 2025, aimed at providing upscale and upper-upscale accommodations in nature-forward destinations.

Postcard Cabins caters to individual travelers and small groups looking to unplug and enjoy nature. Each property, which consists of groupings of tiny cabins, is located within a two hour drive of a major city in the US.

Moving forward, the company’s 29 properties, containing over 1,200 mini cabins, will operate under long-term agreements with Marriott.

According to the hotel giant, the Postcard Cabins portfolio is part of Marriott’s planned outdoor-focused collection and is expected to be integrated into Marriott’s platforms, including Marriott.com and the Marriott Bonvoy mobile app, in 2025.

Chief Financial Officer and Executive VP of Development at Marriott International, Leeny Oberg says:

“Marriott has long been committed to offering incredible travel experiences for every trip purpose. As guests are increasingly interested in nature-immersive travel, we are excited to build on the incredible breadth of our portfolio and welcome the Postcard Cabins and Trailborn portfolios to Marriott Bonvoy as we deliver more accommodations and experiences in awe-inspiring destinations, whether you’re looking for bespoke lodging near natural wonders, an elevated camping experience, or off the beaten path excursions in nature, our planned outdoor-focused collection is expected to offer a broad array of options for seasoned adventurers and first-time explorers.”

In addition to the acquisition of the Postcard Cabin brand, Marriott has announced a long-term marketing and distribution agreement with Trailborn, which offers stays at one-of-a-kind boutique hotels near US national parks such as Rocky Mountain National Park and the Grand Canyon.

The deal will add 559 hotel rooms to Marriott’s system as it aims to offer guests and Marriott Bonvoy members more choice in traditional and alternative accommodations in nature-forward destinations.

Trailborn Co-Founders Mike Weiss and Ben Weinberg are thrilled with the agreement adding “Trailborn is excited to work alongside Marriott to provide guests with the perfect blend of comfort and adventure in stunning outdoor settings.”

The move by Marriott to focus on outdoor lodging follows a similar one by Hyatt. In July 2024, World of Hyatt launched an exclusive alliance with Under Canvas. The upscale accommodation company that connects guests with nature and the outdoors at its safari-inspired camps throughout the United States.

Through the partnership, World of Hyatt members can earn and redeem World of Hyatt points at 13 iconic Under Canvas properties.

Conclusion

Marriott International looks to be capitalizing on the popularity of “nature-forward” destinations. The hotel giant has announced the acquisition of Postcard Cabins, formerly known as Getaway Outposts, and a long-term agreement with outdoor hospitality brand Trailborn.

With both outdoor-focused deals, Marriott says it aims to offer guests and Marriott Bonvoy members more choice in traditional and alternative accommodations in nature-forward destinations.

Postcard Cabins offers tiny cabins nestled in nature across the US, while Trailborn features more than 550 rooms in iconic outdoor destinations in the states. It’s expected both properties will be integrated into Marriott’s platforms, including Marriott.com and the Marriott Bonvoy mobile app, in 2025.
