Video: I Made the Worst Travel Mistake of My Life

This week, I made the worst travel mistake of my life and ended up getting quarantined once again here in Hong Kong.

I fumbled over testing requirements and border controls in an almighty fashion, and I paid the price in the form of an unexpected 14-day quarantine at my own expense of $2,500+.

As we look ahead at the resumption of international travel, don’t let yourself get complacent like me.

Without further ado, you can watch the video below:

Sorry to hear about your ordeal but Hong Kong is really strict with its quarantine. Honestly the rules are complicated so don’t feel too bad about the mistakes. I hope you will get to stay in a nicer hotel after your quarantine and can’t wait to read about your travel plan back to Seattle and then onto Canada.

If you hold a Hongkong ID, why donot you use your “回乡证“ back to Shenzhen instead of using your Canadian Passport?

I’m a little fuzzy on the details here, but I’ve never held a 回乡证 and I don’t think I’m eligible for one as a Canadian national.

Ricky, do not be hard on yourself, stuff happens. Thanks for your honesty, and explaining how it happen, quite interesting. I am glad you got to see your family in your trip.

      Thanks for the encouragement Cal.

Any lounge for platinum + members in the Marriott you are staying now?

    1. Ricky YVR

Actually yes, there’s apparently a lounge on the top floor. Not that I can visit it or anything.

This honestly sounds ridiculous. But very informative and entertaining. I’m sure you well know that Canada is dropping the Hotel Q so you can just hang out in the US somewhere nice and fly home directly to Canada. But I’ve picked up friends at the land border in Ontario, and Niagara Falls is by far the easiest (as opposed to Buffalo). I literally parked in the same parking lot that they take the tests in.

I do need to be back in Canada pretty soon, so the current plan is to fly into Seattle and cross at Peace Arch.

    Everybody makes mistakes. Nobody’s perfect.
Ricky, please – come back to Canada.

Pretty sure he’ll wait for the mandatory 3 day hotel quarantine to end first.

if this is the worst mistake, then life isn’t bad!

    1. Ricky YVR

That’s the perspective I’m taking too. Hopefully my future mistakes (and there will be many) won’t be quite as costly.

Started to suspect this was the case. Appreciate the transparency!
