Video: Hotel Quarantine in China, A Day in the Life

At the start of my trip to China in the spring and summer of 2021, I needed to quarantine for 14 days at a designated quarantine hotel in Shanghai.

In this video, I’ll show you what an average day looks like in hotel quarantine in China, including what my room at the Blue Sky Hotel in Shanghai looks like, the three meals I get per day, and how I keep busy throughout the day.

I’ll also sit down and answer some of the most frequently asked questions that I’ve gotten about the 14-day quarantine experience in China.

I hope you enjoy the video, whether you’re planning a similar trip for family or business reasons sometime in the future, or you’re simply curious about what my past two weeks have been like!

Serious question: Did you (or will you) have to take an anal covid swab? Do you know if that is the case in any other part of China currently?

    1. Ricky YVR

Like VD said – not in my case. A friend of mine who had returned to Beijing a few months back did have to though.

Different cities have different policies, If entering from Shanghai, you don’t need to.

Really enjoyed the video! It was interesting to see the quarantine process, thanks for sharing! I’m curious, what if the food portions weren’t enough and/or you want something else to eat. Was there the ability to contact someone for more/different food? I also noticed you had some bottled water in your room, could you ask for more?

Gyms might have been closed for about a year back in eastern Canada, but they been open since September in Vancouver. Can get back into your regular routine when you return. 😊

    1. Ricky YVR

Yeah – and I really have no excuse besides “being lazy” if I don’t.

Ricky, interesting post. That gave me an idea of what I would encounter for my upcoming trip to Shanghai in September/October. By the way, do you have to use VPN to have access to Google, Gmail, Facebook, Instagram, etc… If so, which VPN you recommend? Thanks and in a week, you will be “free”!

    1. Ricky YVR

Like Marshall said, yeah it’ll depend on your internet access. When I’m roaming on my Canadian number I don’t need a VPN; otherwise, I use ExpressVPN (see 15:09 in the video).

    2. Marshall

Depending on how you plan to access internet. If you use Canadian SIM card by cellular directly, NO VPN is required (you can access any website you want). If you use most of local Wi-Fi or Chinese SIM cards, you DO need VPN to access those websites.
