Transfers are initiated on Marriott’s website, under About Marriott Bonvoy > Redeem Points > Travel > Transfer Points to Miles. From there, you can convert points to airline programs at the listed exchange rate.
Marriott Bonvoy points can be converted to over 40 different airlines’ loyalty programs, which unlocks a wealth of opportunities to redeem miles for flights using various programs’ award chart sweet spots. Indeed, transferring Marriott Bonvoy points is the only easy way for Canadians to earn points within many frequent flyer programs around the world.
Exchange rates vary from program to program, but the conversion rate for the most popular programs is 3 Marriott Bonvoy points = 1 airline mile.
(United Airlines MileagePlus is one exception – you get a 10% bonus when converting to United, so the rate becomes 3 Marriott Bonvoy points = 1.1 United MileagePlus mile.)
You also receive a 25% bonus when converting in chunks of 60,000 points, so the optimal conversion ratio would always be 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points = 25,000 airline miles.
The transfer is initiated on Marriott’s website, navigating through a maze of menus: About Marriott Bonvoy > Redeem Points > Travel > Transfer Points to Miles. Alternatively, you can bookmark the direct link.
The transfer process requires you to select the frequent flyer program you want to convert to, inputting your frequent flyer number and then the number of points you want to convert. Frustratingly, the calculation does not show the 25% bonus when converting in chunks of 60,000 points, but rest assured that you will receive it.
Marriott says that it can take up to six weeks to receive the points; however, it’s usually faster than that. In my recent experience, I transferred Marriott points to United MileagePlus, and the miles showed up in my MileagePlus account within two business days.
