American Airlines Amex Offer: Spend $600, Get $200

To cap off the end of the year, there’s a great new Amex Offer available to most cardholders, allowing you to earn up to a 33% discount on any American Airlines flights booked between now and December 31, 2022.

American Airlines: Spend $600, Get $200

The new American Airlines Amex Offer requires manual registration before it applies to your card. After you register, you’ll earn a $200 (CAD) statement credit upon making at least $600 (CAD) in qualifying flight purchases with American Airlines via the airline’s website by December 31, 2022.

Therefore, if you were to make a purchase of exactly $600, you’d effectively unlock a 33% discount with the $200 statement credit.

Note that only bookings made on the linked American Airlines website count, and purchases made on any other platform, such as the mobile app, are not eligible.

This offer has a registration cap of 30,000 cardholders, so make sure to add this offer to your card as soon as possible to lock in your eligibility.

Indeed, this Amex Offer has been reported across a wide swath of Canadian-issued American Express cards, including the Business Platinum Card, Platinum Card, Gold Rewards Card, Marriott Bonvoy Card, Cobalt Card, and more.

Save on American Airlines Flights for 2023

The offer can be thought of as an incentive to book with American Airlines on any upcoming travel you might have in 2023. American Airlines flies to several Canadian destinations, including Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City, and Halifax.

Credits like these are useful for booking short-haul flights within North America, as well as any attractive paid fares to farther destinations within American Airlines’s network. The airline has strong coverage within the United States, to Hawaii, or to destinations in Central and South America, so keep an eye out for a low fare to anywhere you’d like to visit in 2023.

American Airlines doesn’t allow you to split up a larger purchase into smaller chunks of $600; however, if you need to book multiple passengers, you can easily make several bookings to take advantage of multiple $200 credits.

Can You Buy an American Airlines Gift Card?

Unlike, say, United Airlines, American Airlines doesn’t have any kind of Travel Bank, which makes it much harder to “cash out” Amex Offers or airline incidental credits.

The next best thing would be buying an American Airlines gift card for future use. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to use the Amex Offer this way, as the terms and conditions clearly exclude such actions:

The following are not qualifying purchases for this offer: purchases of gift cards, purchases at ticket counters at airport locations, purchases through the merchant’s mobile application, vacation packages, car rentals, hotel bookings, travel insurance, activities, ground transport, transfers, in-flight purchases, purchases of AA Miles, cargo and freight transport, lounge spend, or flights booked using a travel agent or travel website including American Express Travel Services. Purchases must be made in CAD.

American Airlines gift cards can only be loaded in US dollars, and beyond that, the gift cards are sold on a different website altogether.

With this in mind, I wouldn’t expect gift cards, or any other purchase beyond a regular flight booking via the American Airlines website, to trigger this credit.

Scotiabank American Express Cardholders Can Also Register

As we’ve seen on previous Amex Offers, the “Spend $600, Get $200” American Airlines offer is also available for primary and supplementary cardholders of the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card, the Scotiabank American Express Card, and Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card who can register via this link.

This gives you yet another way to multiply your savings under this promotion by registering and maximizing the Amex Offer on a range of Amex- and Scotiabank-issued Amex products.

Conclusion

American Express has rolled out a new Amex Offer for airline bookings, in which you can earn a $200 statement credit upon spending at least $600 with American Airlines via their official website.

If you have any upcoming travel plans in 2023, be sure to take advantage of this offer to save up to 33% off your American Airlines booking.

Any Amex cards you’ve held for at least a few weeks should be candidates for this offer, so make sure to check all of your accounts. Given the cap of 30,000 cardholders, register your card as soon as possible, and then book a trip with American Airlines before December 31, 2022.

Can you book an AA flight, trigger the offer, then cancel the flight?
