Marriott Amex US Offer: 20% Discount at North American Hotels

There’s a new Amex Offer on the US-issued American Express cards that applies to Marriott hotels across North America, including here in Canada.

For those of us who have gotten into US credit cards, this is an easy opportunity to earn a 20% discount – in the form of a $50 statement credit on $250 in purchases (all figures in USD) – on a Marriott hotel stay until March 31, 2022.

Marriott Hotels in North America: Spend $250, Get $50

The new Marriott Amex US Offer will require manual registration before it applies on your card.

You’ll earn a $50 statement credit upon making a $250 purchase at a Marriott property in Canada, the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

If you were to make a purchase or purchases totalling exactly $250, you’d effectively unlock a 20% discount via the $50 statement credit. The offer works on cumulative purchases, so you can make a few separate cheaper hotel stays if you’d like.

The terms do state that enrollment is limited, so register as soon as possible to lock in your eligibility.

This offer appears to be somewhat targeted, but on a very wide basis, so make sure to check your Amex Offers across all your US-issued American Express cards.

With Amex US, if you have more than one card to your name, it’s fairly likely that you’ll end up receiving an Amex Offer across multiple accounts at first.

However, once you add an offer to one of your accounts, it’s typically no longer eligible to be added to other accounts. That means you should be careful about which card you add the offer to.

Ideally, you’ll be able to add the offer to your Amex US Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card or Amex US Marriott Bonvoy Business Card, as these cards earn the highest possible return of 6x Bonvoy points when spending at Marriott hotels.

Because the credit is applied on the Amex side, the discount will kick in based on the final amount charged by the Marriott hotel. That means you can combine it with other ongoing hotel promotions or money-saving tactics – as long as the bill is at least $250, you’ll get the $50 credit.

This Marriott Amex US Offer is valid until March 31, 2022. As usual, this refers to the transaction date of your hotel stay, so any hotel stay that ends by that date (excluding prepaid stays) should work.

The Fine Print

The most relevant part of the terms and conditions is as follows:

Offer valid only at participating Marriott Bonvoy® properties in the U.S. and U.S. territories, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. Reservations must be made online at Marriott.com, via the Marriott Bonvoy® App or by calling 1-888-236-2427. Excludes Marriott Vacation Club®, Design Hotels™, Protea Hotels®, Marriott Executive Apartments®, Homes & Villas by Marriott International and Vistana Signature Experiences™. Excludes gift card purchases.

As you can see, there’s quite a number of excluded brands, although their collective footprint in Canada is quite limited. But it’s something to take note of in case you were considering staying at, say, Hotel St. Paul, a Design Hotels property in Montreal.

While the terms say otherwise, historically these Marriott offers have also worked with general-purpose Marriott gift cards purchased from a hotel’s front desk, as the purchases are undifferentiated from regular hotel room and incidental charges.

Therefore, even if you don’t plan on staying at enough Marriott hotels this winter and spring to maximize the statement credit, you can still show up to a local Marriott property that sells gift cards and unlock an effective discount on future Marriott stays.

In fact, this strategy would combine well with the $300 Marriott credit per membership year on the Amex US Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card.

You could simply show up at a hotel near you before the March 31 deadline and purchase $300 in Marriott gift cards, unlocking the $300 annual credit and the $50 statement credit in one fell swoop. You’d then be able to use the gift cards towards a future stay after the promotion period has ended.

For those of you who play the game in two-player mode or more, just be aware that most Marriott hotels require that you pay with a credit card that’s in your own name; this is something I had fallen afoul of before when trying to split $1,000+ in gift card purchases across multiple individuals’ cards.

American Express US is offering a new set of $50 statement credits on a $250 purchase on Marriott hotel stays in Canada, the US, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Hopefully it won’t be long until we see Amex Canada follow suit with a similar offer for this season.

Most Amex US cardholders should see this offer on their accounts, as long as you’ve held your card for a few weeks and have started seeing Amex Offers roll in.

Be careful about which card you choose to register the card on. Ideally, you’d add it to one of your Marriott co-branded cards to earn the most Bonvoy points and stack with any annual credits on the card.

Don’t forget to register on your Amex US Offers dashboard before the limited enrollment runs out, and then start planning your Marriott hotel stays before March 31, 2022.

“show up to a local Marriott property that sells gift cards” – how many gift cards can I rack? I mean – can I buy every day a $250 USD gift card at a participating hotel – to get $50 credit for each and every one of those cards?
I have only one US credit card.

  2. Alex

Can I buy more than once a $250usd gc at a Marriott close by?
Will I get yhe $50 credit for every transaction? If so – can the transactions be on the same day?

Ha, it appeared on only my Business Platinum, which offer no multpilier on hotels booked outside amex’ portal. Did not appear on my Bonvoy Business or my Gold, both of which offer substantial multiplers for such spending. Are others seeing this offer on Bonvoy cards?

I got mine on my US Bonvoy Brilliant. Some saw it on both their Bonvoy Brilliant and Bonvoy Business cards and were in fact able to add it to both cards, though I think that’s the exception rather than the rule.
